Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy Take Center Stage as FedExCup Playoffs Begin in Memphis

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy headline the opening of the 2026 FedExCup Playoffs in Memphis.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy headline the opening of the 2026 FedExCup Playoffs in Memphis.

The PGA TOUR postseason has arrived, and two of golf’s biggest stars are immediately stepping into the spotlight.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy headline the action as the 2026 FedEx St. Jude Championship gets underway at TPC Southwind in Memphis.

The tournament runs August 13-16 and serves as the opening event of the FedExCup Playoffs.

Meanwhile, ESPN will bring playoff golf to its primary channel Thursday morning from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. ET. Scheffler and McIlroy are among the marquee names featured during the coverage.

For golf fans, it is about as strong an opening act as the PGA TOUR could ask for.

Scheffler Enters the FedExCup Playoffs at No. 1

Scheffler arrives in Memphis sitting atop the FedExCup standings.

As a result, the world’s top-ranked player enters the postseason directly in the center of the championship conversation.

However, the playoff format makes every round increasingly important.

The FedEx St. Jude Championship is the first stop in the three-event FedExCup Playoffs. The postseason begins with the top 70 players before the field gets smaller as the playoffs progress toward the TOUR Championship.

Therefore, Memphis is not simply another tournament on the schedule.

For players around the qualification line, every birdie, bogey and missed putt could change what happens next.

Scheffler, however, has much bigger goals than simply advancing.

Instead, he enters the postseason with an opportunity to add another major accomplishment to an already remarkable stretch of golf.

Rory McIlroy Brings More Star Power to Memphis

Then there is Rory McIlroy.

Few players in professional golf can command attention quite like him.

McIlroy enters the week as one of the most recognizable players in the sport. Moreover, he remains one of the golfers capable of turning an ordinary Thursday morning into appointment television.

Putting Scheffler and McIlroy at the center of opening-day coverage gives the FedExCup Playoffs an immediate heavyweight feel.

Their styles are different. Their personalities are different. Even their paths through professional golf have taken different routes.

Still, both arrive in Memphis chasing the same ultimate prize: the FedExCup.

When two of the best players of their generation compete on the same course with the postseason officially underway, golf fans have plenty of reasons to watch.

TPC Southwind Will Test the PGA TOUR’s Best

TPC Southwind is hardly a gentle introduction to playoff golf.

The Memphis course will play as a par 70 at 7,288 yards for the 2026 championship.

Water hazards, demanding approach shots and the need for precise ball striking have historically made Southwind a course where mistakes can become expensive quickly.

Consequently, players will need to find their games early.

That becomes even more important during the playoffs.

Golfers cannot afford to spend several rounds waiting for momentum to arrive. Those deeper in the standings need points immediately.

At the same time, players near the top have an opportunity to strengthen their position before the next stage of the postseason.

The pressure begins Thursday.

$20 Million and 750 FedExCup Points Are on the Line

There is plenty at stake beyond simply surviving the opening playoff event.

The 2026 FedEx St. Jude Championship carries a $20 million purse. In addition, the winner receives 750 FedExCup points.

Justin Rose returns as the defending champion after winning the 2025 tournament at 16-under.

Rose defeated J.J. Spaun after both finished regulation at 16-under. Scheffler, meanwhile, finished only one shot behind at 15-under and tied for third.

That performance provides another reason to watch Scheffler closely this week.

After all, he already knows how close he came to winning at Southwind a year ago.

Now, Scheffler returns with the FedExCup postseason beginning and another opportunity waiting.

Thursday Morning Becomes Must-Watch Golf

The PGA TOUR has plenty of recognizable names in Memphis.

Nevertheless, Thursday morning’s spotlight will shine especially bright on Scheffler and McIlroy.

ESPN’s featured coverage is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. ET Thursday. Additional tournament coverage will continue across television and streaming platforms throughout the championship.

For an opening round, it is an unusually compelling television window.

There is no Sunday trophy yet.

Final-nine drama is still several days away.

Likewise, the championship will not be decided during Thursday morning’s coverage.

Instead, fans get something different: the beginning of the sprint toward the FedExCup.

The Road to the FedExCup Starts in Memphis

The regular season is over.

Now the math changes, the fields shrink and every position carries more weight.

Some players arrive in Memphis trying to protect their place. Others need a huge week to keep their season alive.

Meanwhile, the contenders at the very top are thinking about something entirely different.

They want the trophy waiting at the end.

Scheffler starts the playoffs from the No. 1 position. McIlroy remains one of the sport’s ultimate big-stage competitors.

Around them sits a field filled with players who know there are increasingly few opportunities left to make a move.

Ultimately, that is what makes the FedExCup Playoffs different.

Months of major championships, signature events, breakthrough victories and regular-season drama have brought the PGA TOUR to this moment.

Now there are only three tournaments left.

The road begins at TPC Southwind in Memphis.

Two of golf’s biggest names will be in the spotlight when the opening round gets underway.

More importantly, every player in the field understands what is at stake.

The 2026 FedExCup Playoffs have arrived.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are ready.

And from the opening tee shot in Memphis, every shot suddenly means a little bit more.
