Powerful 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Devastates Colombia as Death Toll Rises and Rescue Efforts Continue

Rescue operations continue following a devastating earthquake in Colombia.

Rescue operations continue following a devastating earthquake in Colombia.

A devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake has rocked western Colombia, killing hundreds of people, injuring thousands and leaving communities scrambling to find survivors beneath collapsed buildings.

The earthquake struck on Monday, August 10, 2026, near San José del Palmar in Colombia’s Chocó department. The initial quake hit at approximately 7:34 a.m. local time and originated roughly 110 kilometers below the surface.

Two days later, the scale of the disaster continues to grow.

Reuters reported Wednesday that at least 250 people have died, while rescue crews continue searching damaged buildings and piles of rubble across western Colombia. The casualty figures remain fluid as authorities reach areas that suffered significant damage.

Cities including Pereira, Cali, Manizales, Armenia and surrounding communities experienced destructive shaking, damaged infrastructure and building collapses.

A Powerful Morning Earthquake Sends Residents Into the Streets

The earthquake struck shortly after many Colombians had begun their Monday morning routines.

Within seconds, buildings shook violently and residents rushed outside.

The epicenter was near San José del Palmar in Chocó, but the earthquake’s depth and strength allowed shaking to be felt across a large portion of the country.

Reports indicated tremors could be felt hundreds of miles from the epicentral region.

Colombia sits in one of South America’s most seismically active regions because of the interaction between major tectonic plates beneath and around the country.

The Servicio Geológico Colombiano, or Colombian Geological Service, maintains the country’s national seismic monitoring network and earthquake catalog.

Death Toll Climbs as Thousands Are Injured

The human toll has continued to change as emergency crews reach damaged communities.

Reuters reported Wednesday that the number of deaths had reached at least 250.

Associated Press reporting earlier Wednesday cited at least 181 deaths and 2,595 injuries, along with more than 195 people officially listed as missing at that stage of the emergency response. Those differences illustrate how quickly casualty totals are changing as new information reaches authorities.

Thousands of displaced residents are also reportedly staying in temporary shelters established in schools, parks and other public areas.

For families across the hardest-hit areas, the search for missing relatives remains the priority.

Incredible Rescue Provides Hope in Pereira

Amid the destruction, remarkable stories of survival are emerging.

One involves a 32-year-old woman named Daniela, who disappeared after the earthquake while her family desperately tried to determine whether she had survived.

She had reportedly been inside a four-story lodging building in downtown Pereira.

Nearly 38 hours after the earthquake, rescuers discovered her alive beneath the debris.

Her arm was trapped by a metal door, requiring an extensive operation involving dozens of rescuers and volunteers to free her.

When she was finally pulled from the wreckage alive, crowds surrounding the scene erupted in celebration.

The timing made the rescue even more emotional.

The earthquake occurred on her son’s 12th birthday.

What began as a birthday filled with fear ultimately became a story of survival for one Colombian family.

More Than 100 Aftershocks Shake Colombia

The danger did not end after Monday morning’s main earthquake.

Colombia has experienced approximately 130 aftershocks, according to reporting citing the Colombian Geological Service.

Those aftershocks have ranged from approximately magnitude 0.6 to 4.8. The strongest occurred shortly after the original quake.

Aftershocks are common following powerful earthquakes because stresses within the Earth’s crust continue adjusting after the main seismic event.

For residents already traumatized by the initial quake, however, each new tremor creates another frightening moment.

Aftershocks can also complicate rescue efforts because previously damaged buildings may become increasingly unstable.

Rescue Crews Race Against Time

Emergency crews continue working through collapsed structures as the window for finding additional survivors narrows.

In cities such as Pereira and Cali, images show firefighters, specialized rescue teams and volunteers moving concrete, bricks and twisted metal while heavy equipment removes larger pieces of debris.

The Associated Press reported that Colombia’s emergency response has become an enormous logistical operation involving local authorities, national agencies, humanitarian organizations and international assistance.

The United States has pledged more than $15 million in assistance, according to AP, while countries including Mexico and El Salvador have also offered support.

Search-and-rescue operations remain the immediate priority.

Why Colombia Experiences Powerful Earthquakes

Colombia’s geography makes earthquakes a persistent natural hazard.

The country lies near the complex interaction of the Nazca, South American and Caribbean tectonic plates.

As those plates move, enormous amounts of pressure can accumulate beneath the Earth’s surface.

Eventually, that energy can be released through earthquakes.

The U.S. Geological Survey monitors major earthquakes worldwide through its Earthquake Hazards Program and Advanced National Seismic System.

Earthquake damage does not depend on magnitude alone.

Depth, distance from population centers, soil conditions and building construction can dramatically influence how destructive an earthquake becomes.

Monday’s Colombia earthquake occurred relatively deep underground, which may have reduced the maximum surface intensity compared with a similarly powerful shallow earthquake.

Even so, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake releases an enormous amount of energy.

One of Colombia’s Deadliest Earthquakes in Decades

The disaster is already being described as Colombia’s deadliest earthquake since the 1999 Armenia earthquake.

That earthquake devastated Colombia’s coffee-growing region and killed more than 1,000 people.

Monday’s earthquake once again struck communities in and around western Colombia’s mountainous coffee region.

The full extent of the economic damage from the 2026 earthquake will likely take weeks or months to calculate.

Homes, businesses, roads and public buildings will require inspection, while some neighborhoods face extensive rebuilding.

The Numbers May Continue to Change

One important reality remains: the death toll, injury count and number of missing people are still developing figures.

Different agencies and news organizations may report different totals as information is verified.

That is common during major disasters, particularly while rescuers are still searching collapsed structures and communications remain disrupted.

What is clear is that Colombia is facing a major humanitarian emergency.

Hundreds of families have lost loved ones.

Thousands are injured or displaced.

Rescue crews are working around the clock.

And beneath the devastation, families continue waiting for the possibility of one more miracle.

For now, Colombia’s focus remains where it has been since the ground began shaking Monday morning: finding survivors, caring for the injured and beginning the enormous process of recovery.

Reporting and information used for this developing story include Reuters, The Associated Press, the Colombian Geological Service (Servicio Geológico Colombiano), U.S. Geological Survey and El País.

This is a developing story. Casualty totals and damage estimates may change as Colombian authorities provide additional information.
