Scottie Scheffler enters the final round of the 2026 FedEx St. Jude Championship with a two-shot lead, but the battle behind him extends well beyond who lifts the trophy.
Sam Burns and Sungjae Im are his closest challengers. Meanwhile, players throughout the field are fighting to finish inside the top 50 in the FedExCup standings and earn a ticket to next week’s BMW Championship.
The opening playoff event began with 69 players after Daniel Berger withdrew because of injury. By Sunday evening, only the top 50 in the season-long standings will remain alive.
That makes Day 4 in Memphis about much more than first place.
Scheffler Has the Lead — Now He Has to Finish
Scheffler carries a two-stroke advantage into Sunday’s final round after shooting a 2-under 68 on Saturday.
It wasn’t the kind of dominant performance fans saw Friday, when Scheffler fired a spectacular 9-under 61 to tie the TPC Southwind course record. Instead, Saturday became a test of patience.
Scheffler endured an uneven start before settling down and maintaining control of the tournament.
Now comes the part that has proved surprisingly difficult for the world’s top-ranked golfer in 2026: closing the deal.
Scheffler has accumulated five runner-up finishes and five additional top-four finishes since winning his first tournament of the year. Another opportunity is directly in front of him Sunday in Memphis.
And this one carries enormous postseason implications.
Sam Burns Gets the Final Pairing With His Friend
Sunday’s final pairing brings another layer to the story.
Scheffler will play alongside longtime friend Sam Burns, who sits two shots behind the leader.
The friendship is well known around professional golf, but there won’t be much room for favors once the final pairing reaches the first tee.
Burns has positioned himself to potentially steal the opening FedExCup Playoffs event from Scheffler, and one early swing could quickly erase a two-shot deficit.
The two friends will now spend 18 holes trying to beat each other for one of the biggest titles remaining on the PGA TOUR calendar.
Don’t Forget About Sungjae Im
Burns isn’t Scheffler’s only immediate threat.
Sungjae Im is also two shots back after rounds of 66, 66 and 67 through the first three days.
His Sunday could dramatically change his postseason.
Im entered the week No. 53 in the FedExCup standings — outside the top-50 cutoff required to advance. His performance in Memphis has put him in position to make a major jump.
If his current position near the top of the leaderboard holds, Im is projected to comfortably move inside the top 50 and advance to the BMW Championship.
That’s exactly what makes the first playoff tournament so compelling.
A player can arrive Thursday facing elimination and leave Sunday suddenly positioned for a run at the Tour Championship.
The Other Leaderboard Is Just as Important
There are really two leaderboards to watch Sunday.
The first determines who wins the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
The second determines whose season continues.
The FedExCup Playoffs began in Memphis with the top 70 players from the regular-season standings qualifying for the opening event. After the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the field shrinks to 50 players for the BMW Championship.
After the BMW, it shrinks again.
Only 30 players will reach the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.
That means players around 45th through 55th in the projected standings could experience enormous swings Sunday.
A birdie might extend a season.
A double bogey could end one.
TPC Southwind Isn’t Giving Anything Away
TPC Southwind has once again proven why it works so well as a playoff venue.
The par-70 course measures approximately 7,288 yards and combines water, demanding approach shots and difficult scoring stretches that can quickly punish mistakes.
Then there is the Memphis heat.
Saturday brought brutal conditions, with temperatures around 100 degrees and the heat index reportedly climbing well above that mark for spectators and players on the property.
Sunday will require players to manage more than their golf swings. Endurance and concentration could become factors as the pressure increases on the back nine.
$3.6 Million Awaits the Winner
There is also plenty of money on the line.
The FedEx St. Jude Championship carries a $20 million purse, with $3.6 million going to the winner.
But at this point in the season, FedExCup position may be even more valuable.
Making the top 50 means advancing to next week’s BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis. From there, the remaining players will battle for one of 30 spots at East Lake and a chance to become FedExCup champion.
What to Watch on Sunday
The biggest question is obvious: Can Scheffler turn another lead into a victory?
His Friday 61 showed how quickly he can separate himself from the field. Saturday showed that TPC Southwind can still make him work.
Burns will have the opportunity to apply pressure from the same pairing.
Im has perhaps even more at stake because he’s simultaneously chasing the championship and fighting to secure his place in the next round.
Then there are dozens of smaller battles happening behind them.
Some players aren’t realistically chasing the trophy anymore. They’re chasing 50th place.
That could make the final few holes every bit as dramatic near the middle of the leaderboard as they are at the top.
