Macaulay Culkin could potentially return to the Home Alone franchise as an adult Kevin McCallister.
More than three decades after Kevin McCallister first defended his house with paint cans, icy stairs and a strategically placed tarantula, Macaulay Culkin may be preparing to go Home Alone again.
This time, however, Kevin could be the one trying to get into the house.
Culkin has reportedly been in discussions with Disney about returning to the franchise that made him one of the most recognizable child stars in movie history. Multiple reports say the project remains in its early stages. PEOPLE reported that a source described Culkin’s concept as having an “almost green light” from Disney, while representatives for Disney and Culkin had not publicly commented on the report.
If it happens, this wouldn’t simply be another remake of the 1990 Christmas classic. Instead, Culkin has developed an idea that flips the original premise on its head.
Kevin McCallister Is All Grown Up
Culkin previously revealed his concept during his A Nostalgic Night With Macaulay Culkin tour.
His version would bring Kevin McCallister back as an adult father. Kevin would be either divorced or widowed and struggling to balance work with raising his child.
Eventually, his son becomes frustrated by his father’s lack of attention.
Then comes the twist.
Kevin gets locked out of his own house.
His son remains inside and begins constructing traps designed to stop Kevin from getting back in. Suddenly, the kid who once terrorized Harry and Marv with homemade booby traps finds himself on the receiving end of them.
It’s a simple reversal, but it’s also exactly the kind of premise that could make a legacy sequel work.
The House Would Mean Something Different
The concept apparently wouldn’t rely entirely on slapstick comedy.
Culkin has explained that the house would represent the damaged relationship between Kevin and his son. Therefore, Kevin’s effort to get back inside becomes more than a physical challenge.
He’s also trying to reconnect with his child.
In Culkin’s description of the idea, getting back into the house would essentially mean getting back into his son’s heart.
That gives a potential sequel something the franchise desperately needs: a reason to exist beyond nostalgia.
Yes, audiences would get traps.
Yes, Kevin would probably take some spectacular punishment.
And yes, Disney could pack the movie with callbacks to the original.
However, underneath all of that could be a story about fatherhood, growing older and realizing that Kevin McCallister isn’t eight years old anymore.
Disney Reportedly Likes the Idea
The biggest development is that Culkin’s concept may now have serious momentum.
Matt Belloni reported on The Town podcast that Culkin had been seen at Disney and that the company was extremely interested in getting him involved with another Home Alone project. Belloni also said people familiar with the idea believed it was strong.
Then, PEOPLE added another significant report days later.
A source told the outlet that discussions were still at a very early stage but described the project as close to receiving Disney’s approval. The source also said Disney liked Culkin’s idea and that there was enthusiasm around making it happen.
Importantly, none of this means cameras are about to start rolling.
There is currently no officially announced release date, director or production schedule. Disney has also not formally announced Culkin’s return as Kevin McCallister.
For now, this remains a developing project rather than a confirmed movie.
Why Macaulay Culkin Changes Everything
Disney has already tried bringing Home Alone back without Culkin.
The studio released Home Sweet Home Alone on Disney+ in 2021 with a new cast and another child caught in a chaotic home-invasion scenario.
But for millions of viewers, Home Alone isn’t simply a concept.
It’s Kevin McCallister.
Culkin starred in 1990’s Home Alone and returned for 1992’s Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Later installments moved forward with different characters and actors.
Bringing Culkin back would immediately distinguish another movie from those attempts.
More importantly, audiences who watched Kevin as children now have children of their own.
That makes Culkin’s father-son concept particularly interesting. The character could essentially grow alongside the audience that made him famous.
Nostalgia Alone Won’t Be Enough
There is still plenty of reason for caution.
Hollywood has spent years mining beloved franchises for sequels, reboots and legacy follow-ups. Some have worked spectacularly. Others have demonstrated that bringing back a familiar actor isn’t enough to recreate the magic of an original movie.
Even Home Alone director Chris Columbus has expressed skepticism about revisiting the franchise, arguing that the original films represented a particular moment that shouldn’t necessarily be recreated.
That’s why Culkin’s idea could matter.
Instead of pretending nothing has changed, the concept embraces the fact that everything has changed.
Kevin grew up.
His audience grew up.
Now he potentially has a kid capable of doing to him exactly what he once did to two burglars.
That’s nostalgia with an actual story attached to it.
Could Harry and Marv Return?
Naturally, a Culkin comeback would immediately raise another question: Could any other original characters return?
There is currently no credible confirmation that Joe Pesci or Daniel Stern would reprise their roles as Harry and Marv.
Still, Disney would have plenty of opportunities for carefully placed callbacks if the project moves forward.
The challenge would be avoiding a movie built entirely around cameos and references.
A grown-up Kevin needs his own story.
Culkin’s pitch appears designed to give him one.
A Christmas Movie Disney Would Love to Have
There is another reason Disney could find the project attractive: Home Alone remains deeply connected to Christmas.
Every holiday season introduces the original movie to another generation.
Belloni specifically pointed to the franchise’s enduring seasonal streaming appeal when discussing why a Culkin-led revival could have significant value for Disney.
A successful sequel could potentially become more than one movie, too.
Disney wouldn’t simply be reviving an old title. It could reestablish Home Alone as an active holiday franchise built around an adult Kevin and a new generation of McCallisters.
Of course, that’s getting ahead of where things currently stand.
First, Disney and Culkin would need to actually make the movie.

There is something wonderfully ridiculous about Kevin McCallister spending his childhood constructing elaborate traps only to grow up and discover that his own kid learned the same tricks.
But the emotional element makes Culkin’s pitch more compelling.
The original Home Alone wasn’t memorable only because Kevin dropped paint cans on burglars.
At its heart, it was about a kid who thought he didn’t need his family before discovering how much they mattered.
A new movie could reverse that lesson.
Adult Kevin may have become so consumed with life that he stopped recognizing what his son needed from him.
This time, getting home wouldn’t simply mean opening the front door.
It would mean rebuilding a family.
And if Disney can capture that while giving audiences a few outrageous traps along the way, Kevin McCallister might actually have one more Christmas adventure worth watching.
