The SEC Football Legends class for 2026 is official, and Georgia’s name on the list is a familiar one: Mark Richt. The conference announced the class on Thursday, with one honoree for each of its 16 schools.
Richt coached the Bulldogs from 2001 to 2015. For Georgia fans, this one lands right in the heart. It is also the kind of football legends honor that gets a fan base talking for weeks.
Why Richt is Georgia’s pick for the SEC Legends class
The résumé is hard to argue with. Richt won 145 games and lost 51 in Athens. He took home SEC titles in 2002 and 2005 and won five Eastern Division crowns, plus a share of another.
The league also named him its Coach of the Year in both championship seasons. In other words, the conference has been rating him highly for a long time. Still, this honor just makes it official again.
He is already in the College Football Hall of Fame, class of 2023. Georgia also honored him at halftime of a home game back in 2021. At this point, the man is collecting tributes the way Georgia once collected Eastern Division trophies.
The rest of the 2026 class
Richt shares the stage with some heavy names. In fact, the headliner is Nick Saban, honored for Alabama. The full list reads like a fantasy draft of SEC history, so here is every name on it:
- Nick Saban (Alabama)
- Felix Jones (Arkansas)
- Benji Roland (Auburn)
- Chris Doering (Florida)
- Randall Cobb (Kentucky)
- Patrick Peterson (LSU)
- Tony Bennett (Ole Miss)
- Darius Slay (Mississippi State)
- Sean Weatherspoon (Missouri)
- Billy Sims (Oklahoma)
- Sidney Rice (South Carolina)
- John Henderson (Tennessee)
- Ricky Williams (Texas)
- Sam Adams (Texas A&M)
- Casey Hayward (Vanderbilt)
One quick clarification, because the internet will absolutely get this wrong. Ole Miss’s Tony Bennett is the former linebacker who played from 1986 to 1989. He is not the basketball coach.
The SEC says the class includes Heisman Trophy winners, national champions, All-Americans, All-SEC selections and NFL standouts. That is a lot of trophies in one room.
Here’s the thing: why the SEC Football Legends honor matters in Athens
Richt’s era is the bridge between two versions of Georgia football. He built the program into a consistent winner, then handed it off in 2016 to Kirby Smart. Plenty of Bulldog fans still credit him with the foundation.
So when the SEC puts his name on a legends list, it is more than a nostalgia trip. It is a reminder of how Georgia got to where it is today. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are the reigning conference champs, having beaten Alabama in the 2025 SEC title game. What happens next
The SEC will celebrate the class during its Weekend of Champions in Atlanta. The SEC Legends Celebration is set for Friday, Dec. 4, at the College Football Hall of Fame. The SEC will then recognize the honorees before the SEC Championship Game on Saturday, Dec. 5, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
No source says whether Richt will attend. If he does, expect a warm reception from the red-and-black faithful. Still, the man works in the sport as an ACC Network analyst, so he is not exactly hard to find.
The real question for Dec. 5: will the cheers for Richt be louder than the ones for the actual game? In Georgia, that is a fair bet.
