Wyndham Championship 2026: PGA Tour Heads to Greensboro for Historic Regular-Season Finale

The Wyndham Championship returns to Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, August 6–9, 2026.

The Wyndham Championship returns to Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, August 6–9, 2026.

The PGA Tour heads to North Carolina this week for one of the oldest tournaments on its schedule — and one of the most important events of the entire season.

The 2026 Wyndham Championship will take place August 6–9 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. The tournament carries an $8.5 million purse, awards 500 FedExCup points to the champion and serves as the final event of the PGA Tour regular season.

That last distinction makes Wyndham much more than another summer golf tournament.

For players sitting around the FedExCup cutoff, four rounds in Greensboro can determine whether their postseason continues or their season ends.

2026 Wyndham Championship Details

Dates: August 6–9, 2026

Location: Greensboro, North Carolina

FedExCup Points: 500 to the winner

Defending Champion: Cameron Young

The PGA Tour officially lists competition from Thursday, August 6 through Sunday, August 9. Tournament activities begin Wednesday, August 5.

Fans should check the PGA Tour’s official schedule and local listings for finalized television and streaming windows as tournament week progresses.

One of the Oldest Tournaments on the PGA Tour

The Wyndham Championship isn’t simply another stop before the FedExCup Playoffs.

It’s golf history.

The tournament began in 1938 as the Greater Greensboro Open. Today, it ranks as the seventh-oldest PGA Tour event outside the major championships. The 2026 edition marks the 87th renewal of North Carolina’s oldest professional golf tournament.

Its list of champions reads like a tour through professional golf history.

Sam Snead.

Ben Hogan.

Byron Nelson.

Gary Player.

Seve Ballesteros.

Davis Love III.

Sergio Garcia.

Henrik Stenson.

Webb Simpson.

And that’s only part of the list.

According to tournament organizers, 19 former Wyndham champions have been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

It All Started With Sam Snead

Few players are connected to a PGA Tour tournament quite like Sam Snead is connected to Greensboro.

Snead won the inaugural Greater Greensboro Open in 1938. He eventually captured the tournament eight times, an extraordinary record that remains part of the event’s identity.

His final Greensboro victory came in 1965.

Snead was 52 years, 10 months and eight days old, making him the oldest winner in PGA Tour history — a record that still stands. The victory was also the last of Snead’s record-tying 82 PGA Tour wins.

Even more remarkable, Snead’s first and final Greensboro victories came 27 years apart.

Ben Hogan Won Here During a Snow-Delayed Tournament

The tournament’s early history produced some incredible stories.

In 1940, Ben Hogan arrived in Greensboro after earning the first victory of his professional career at the North and South Open in Pinehurst.

Then winter intervened.

Approximately three inches of snow fell after the opening round, delaying the tournament for three days. Once play resumed, Hogan dominated and eventually won by nine strokes.

It became another chapter in the early career of one of golf’s greatest players.

Byron Nelson Was Part of the Tournament’s Golden Era

Another legend soon added his name to the Greensboro trophy.

Byron Nelson won the event in 1941 and again in 1945.

His 1945 victory came during one of the greatest stretches of golf ever played. Nelson’s Greensboro victory was the third tournament during his legendary streak of 11 consecutive PGA Tour victories.

That alone illustrates how deeply the tournament is woven into professional golf history.

A Baseball Player Once Won the Tournament

Perhaps the strangest piece of Wyndham Championship history came in 1942.

Sam Byrd, a former Major League Baseball player who had served as Babe Ruth’s backup with the New York Yankees, won the tournament.

He remains the only former Major League Baseball player to win an official PGA Tour event.

Seve Ballesteros Announced Himself to America in Greensboro

Greensboro also played a significant role in the career of Seve Ballesteros.

In 1978, the 20-year-old Spanish star made his American professional debut at the tournament.

Then he won it.

The victory became the first of Ballesteros’ nine PGA Tour titles and offered American golf fans an early look at the player who would become one of the sport’s most charismatic international superstars.

The Tournament Eventually Became the Wyndham Championship

For decades, fans knew the tournament primarily as the Greater Greensboro Open.

However, sponsorship changes eventually reshaped its identity.

The modern Wyndham era began in 2007, when PGA Tour rookie Brandt Snedeker won the inaugural Wyndham Championship. He later earned PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors.

Then came another major change.

The tournament returned to Sedgefield Country Club in 2008 after spending 31 years at Forest Oaks Country Club.

That move brought the tournament back to its roots.

Sedgefield Country Club Is Part of the Story

Sedgefield isn’t simply the venue hosting the Wyndham Championship.

The course has been connected to the tournament since the beginning.

The event originally used both Sedgefield and Starmount Forest Country Club. In fact, players competed at both courses during the inaugural 1938 tournament.

Legendary architect Donald Ross originally designed Sedgefield. Today, its strategic layout remains capable of challenging modern PGA Tour players despite lacking the massive length found at many newer tournament venues.

Accuracy matters.

Position matters.

Approach shots matter.

Most importantly, players usually need birdies — lots of them.

Recent winning scores show just how aggressive players must be. Cameron Young won the 2025 championship at 22-under, while past champions including Tom Kim, Lucas Glover, Jim Herman, Brandt Snedeker and Henrik Stenson have also reached 20-under or better.

Cameron Young Returns as Defending Champion

Cameron Young enters the 2026 tournament as defending champion after dominating Sedgefield in 2025.

Young finished the tournament at 22-under, shooting 258 over four rounds. He finished six strokes ahead of Mac Meissner.

The victory added Young’s name to an impressive modern champions list.

Recent Wyndham winners include Aaron Rai, Lucas Glover, Tom Kim, Kevin Kisner, Jim Herman, J.T. Poston, Brandt Snedeker and Henrik Stenson.

Why the 2026 Wyndham Championship Matters So Much

The history is impressive.

However, the tournament’s position on the calendar makes it especially dramatic.

The Wyndham Championship is the final tournament of the PGA Tour regular season.

When the final putt drops Sunday evening, the top 70 players in the FedExCup standings advance to the playoffs.

Everyone else goes home.

That creates pressure throughout the leaderboard.

A player near the FedExCup bubble might need a top-20 finish to survive. Another might need a top five. Someone farther down the standings may have no choice but to win.

Suddenly, a six-foot par putt on Friday afternoon can carry postseason consequences.

The FedExCup Playoffs Begin Immediately After Wyndham

There is virtually no break after Greensboro.

The PGA Tour heads directly into the postseason with the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis from August 13–16.

That tournament carries a $20 million purse.

From there, the postseason continues with the BMW Championship before culminating at the TOUR Championship.

Therefore, Wyndham represents the final opportunity for players to earn their way into golf’s postseason.

Nearly Nine Decades of Golf History

The Wyndham Championship has survived changing sponsors, different golf courses, wars, weather delays and enormous transformations across professional golf.

Yet Greensboro remains part of the PGA Tour.

From Sam Snead winning the inaugural tournament in 1938 to Cameron Young lifting the trophy in 2025, generations of golf’s biggest names have competed here.

Now another chapter begins.

The 2026 Wyndham Championship tees off Thursday, August 6, with $8.5 million at stake and an even bigger prize hanging over dozens of players.

A place in the FedExCup Playoffs.

For the stars safely inside the postseason field, Greensboro represents another opportunity to win.

For everyone sitting near the bubble, however, the equation is much simpler.

Four rounds. One final chance. And potentially an entire season riding on every shot.
