Jaguar Unveils 1,015-HP Type 01 EV as the British Brand Begins Its Radical Reinvention

The 2028 Jaguar Type 01 introduces Jaguar's radically redesigned electric era with more than 1,000 horsepower.
The 2028 Jaguar Type 01 introduces Jaguar's radically redesigned electric era with more than 1,000 horsepower.

The 2028 Jaguar Type 01 delivers more than 1,000 horsepower, an estimated 400 miles of range and concept-car styling that leaves almost nothing conventional behind.

Jaguar has spent the past two years telling the world it was preparing to become something dramatically different.

Now we finally know what that means.

The British automaker officially unveiled the 2028 Jaguar Type 01, an all-electric four-door grand tourer that will spearhead Jaguar’s next generation of vehicles. The production-ready car made its world premiere in New York on October 6. Jaguar calls it the most powerful and technologically advanced production vehicle in the company’s history.

And subtlety clearly wasn’t part of the assignment.

1,015 Horsepower Changes the Jaguar Conversation

Underneath the Type 01’s dramatic bodywork is a three-motor electric powertrain.

One motor powers the front axle, while two motors sit at the rear. Combined output reaches 1,015 horsepower and 1,007 pound-feet of torque. Jaguar estimates the Type 01 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds.

That makes the Type 01 the most powerful Jaguar road car ever produced.

The car also receives standard all-wheel steering, air suspension and adaptive dampers. Despite its enormous proportions and extremely long hood, Jaguar says the vehicle maintains a 50:50 weight distribution.

This isn’t simply Jaguar building an electric replacement for one of its existing sedans.

It’s effectively Jaguar starting over.

Up to 400 Miles of Range

Performance is only part of the story.

Jaguar has equipped the Type 01 with a 118-kWh battery, with the automaker targeting approximately 400 miles of driving range.

The electrical architecture supports rapid DC charging. On a 350-kW charger, Jaguar estimates the battery can go from 10% to 80% in roughly 22 minutes.

Drivers in a hurry could potentially add around 200 miles of range in approximately 13 minutes.

Those numbers would put the Type 01 among the more compelling long-distance luxury EVs if they hold up in real-world testing.

Jaguar Actually Built the Wild Concept

Perhaps the biggest surprise is how closely the production vehicle follows Jaguar’s controversial design transformation.

The Type 01 is enormous, low and unapologetically theatrical.

Its stretched hood and cab-rear proportions make it look more like a futuristic concept car than a conventional luxury EV. Massive wheels fill the arches, while extremely thin lighting elements and a heavily sculpted body give the vehicle a completely different identity from Jaguars of the past.

Even the rear abandons convention.

There is no traditional rear window. Instead, Jaguar uses cameras and digital displays to provide rearward visibility.

It is precisely the kind of design likely to generate two very different reactions:

“That’s incredible.”

Or:

“What happened to Jaguar?”

And that may be exactly what the company wants.

The Interior Is Just as Radical

Jaguar hasn’t suddenly become conservative once you open the doors.

The cabin uses a dramatic central spine running through the interior, creating four individual seating spaces. Jaguar describes the layout as taking its concept-car vision directly into production.

Technology is intentionally integrated rather than scattered across the dashboard.

A large 24-inch primary display anchors the digital experience, while smaller displays handle additional vehicle functions. Jaguar also incorporates a digital rearview system to compensate for the missing rear glass.

The result looks less like a traditional British luxury sedan and more like an architectural lounge traveling at 60 mph.

Why It’s Called Type 01

Even the name represents Jaguar’s attempt to connect its history with its future.

According to Jaguar, “Type” references the company’s legendary historical models.

The “0” represents zero tailpipe emissions, while the “1” identifies the car as the first vehicle of Jaguar’s new generation.

That’s important because Type 01 isn’t supposed to be another model added to Jaguar’s lineup.

It represents the beginning of an entirely new Jaguar.

Jaguar Is Betting the Brand on This

Jaguar’s transformation has been one of the automotive industry’s most debated rebrands.

The company deliberately moved away from its familiar identity while preparing an all-electric product portfolio. Jaguar confirms that its U.S. retailers will continue selling legacy vehicles until the Type 01 arrives, after which the lineup transitions into its new electric era.

That makes Type 01 considerably more important than a normal new-car launch.

It has to prove that Jaguar can move dramatically upmarket, embrace electric propulsion and attract a new generation of customers without losing the desirability that made the badge famous.

Jaguar isn’t trying to make everyone comfortable with this car.

It’s trying to make everyone notice it.

On that front, mission accomplished.

Pricing Could Start Around $120,000

Official final U.S. pricing has not yet been locked down.

Early expectations place the Type 01 somewhere around $120,000 to $130,000, depending on configuration. Deliveries are expected to begin around the middle of 2027, while Jaguar says orders open in early 2027.

That pricing pushes Jaguar firmly into serious luxury territory.

But Jaguar clearly isn’t attempting to compete by offering the cheapest electric sedan.

It’s selling design, exclusivity and spectacle.

A Jaguar Nobody Can Ignore

For years, Jaguar’s biggest problem wasn’t that its cars were bad.

It was that the brand had increasingly struggled to command attention in a luxury market dominated by Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche and rapidly evolving electric competitors.

The Type 01 certainly fixes the attention problem.

With 1,015 horsepower, a targeted 400-mile range, three electric motors, ultra-fast charging and one of the most unconventional designs currently headed for production, Jaguar has created something almost impossible to confuse with anything else.

Whether buyers embrace it remains the billion-dollar question.

But Jaguar didn’t spend years reinventing itself just to produce another anonymous luxury EV.

The Type 01 is the company’s declaration that the old Jaguar era is over.

And whatever comes next is going to be very, very different.
