Thursday Market Watch: PPI Inflation Report Takes Center Stage as Wall Street Hovers Near Records

Wall Street turns its attention to the July Producer Price Index as investors assess inflation and the Federal Reserve outlook.

August 13, 2026

Wall Street enters Thursday morning with another major inflation test on deck.

After Wednesday’s Consumer Price Index report offered investors some relief on consumer inflation, attention now shifts upstream. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is scheduled to release the July Producer Price Index at 8:30 a.m. ET Thursday, giving markets another look at whether inflationary pressure is building inside the economy before those costs reach consumers.

The timing matters.

U.S. stocks are hovering near record territory following a powerful technology-led rally, while investors continue trying to determine what inflation, interest rates, oil prices and the Federal Reserve will mean for the remainder of 2026.

Thursday could provide another piece of that puzzle.

What Is the Producer Price Index?

Think of PPI as inflation before it reaches your shopping cart.

While the Consumer Price Index measures changes in prices paid by consumers, the Producer Price Index tracks changes in selling prices received by domestic producers for their goods and services.

That makes PPI an important early-warning indicator.

If manufacturers, wholesalers and other businesses face rapidly rising prices, companies eventually have a choice: absorb those costs and accept smaller profit margins, or pass some of them along to customers.

For the average American, that means today’s producer inflation can potentially become tomorrow’s higher retail prices.

Why Thursday’s PPI Report Matters More Than Usual

Wednesday’s July CPI report showed headline consumer prices rising 0.1% for the month and 3.4% from a year earlier. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, increased 0.2% for the month and 2.5% over the previous 12 months.

Those numbers helped calm some fears that inflation was accelerating sharply again.

But one report doesn’t settle the inflation debate.

Reuters noted Thursday morning that investors remain focused on PPI and other inflation indicators, particularly with core and headline inflation measures still creating uncertainty around the Federal Reserve’s next move.

A surprisingly hot PPI reading could undermine some of Wednesday’s optimism.

A cooler report could strengthen the argument that inflationary pressures are gradually easing.

What It Could Mean for Interest Rates

The Federal Reserve doesn’t set monetary policy based on one CPI or PPI report. Officials examine employment, consumer spending, wages, inflation expectations and several measures of inflation.

Still, every new report changes the market’s expectations.

Following the latest consumer inflation data, traders have been reassessing the probability of what the Fed does next. Reuters reported Thursday morning that markets were assigning roughly a 66% probability that the Federal Reserve holds rates steady, illustrating just how sensitive expectations remain to incoming economic data.

That’s why PPI matters beyond Wall Street.

Interest-rate expectations can eventually influence:

  • Mortgage rates
  • Auto financing
  • Credit-card borrowing
  • Business loans
  • Savings yields
  • Treasury yields
  • Stock valuations

Inflation isn’t simply an economic statistic. It can ultimately affect how much Americans pay to borrow money.

Wall Street Is Cautiously Higher Ahead of the Report

U.S. stock futures edged higher early Thursday as investors waited for PPI.

Reuters reported that Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures were posting modest gains early in the morning, while declining crude-oil prices provided another potential source of inflation relief.

Oil remains especially important.

Energy prices work their way through an enormous portion of the economy. Transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, shipping and air travel can all feel the effects when fuel costs rise.

Brent crude fell about 1.9% Thursday morning after six consecutive gains, according to Reuters, although geopolitical uncertainty surrounding Iran and the United States remains an important risk for energy markets.

If oil begins climbing aggressively again, inflation could become considerably harder to contain.

Sandisk Investor Day Puts AI Storage in Focus

Inflation isn’t the only event investors will be watching Thursday.

Sandisk is also in focus as investors evaluate the company’s strategy following its return as an independent publicly traded company after separating from Western Digital in February 2025.

The storage company enters the discussion with considerable momentum.

Sandisk reported fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 revenue of $8.97 billion, up 51% sequentially, highlighting the extraordinary growth taking place across parts of the memory and storage market.

Artificial intelligence has become an increasingly important part of the company’s long-term story.

Sandisk has previously highlighted expanding AI workloads, enterprise solid-state drives and rising data-center investment as significant opportunities for its flash-storage technology.

Investors will therefore be listening closely for clues about demand, margins, capital spending, AI infrastructure and the company’s longer-term growth strategy.

IDEXX Laboratories Also Takes the Investor-Day Stage

IDEXX Laboratories is another company on Thursday’s corporate calendar, with investors watching for updates surrounding the veterinary diagnostics and animal-health business.

Investor days often receive less attention than quarterly earnings reports, but they can provide something earnings calls don’t: a deeper look at management’s long-term strategy.

Executives can use these events to outline growth targets, product pipelines, investment priorities and financial goals stretching several years into the future.

For long-term investors, those details can matter just as much as the latest quarter.

Technology Stocks Remain a Major Market Driver

Technology continues to play an outsized role in the 2026 market rally.

The S&P 500 recently gained roughly 5.75% across four trading sessions, according to Reuters, as technology and semiconductor shares helped push markets toward record levels.

Thursday morning offered another reminder that earnings can still create major individual-stock swings.

Dell and HP moved higher in premarket trading following encouraging results from Lenovo, while Cisco fell despite issuing a positive revenue outlook. AI-chip company Cerebras also dropped sharply following disappointing results.

That divergence is important.

Investors may remain enthusiastic about artificial intelligence, but the market is increasingly demanding that companies prove the AI boom can translate into revenue, earnings and sustainable growth.

What Average Americans Should Watch Today

You don’t have to be a day trader to care about Thursday’s economic calendar.

The biggest number is PPI.

If producer inflation comes in hotter than expected, Treasury yields could rise as investors price in the possibility of tighter monetary policy for longer. Growth stocks could come under pressure, and borrowing-cost expectations could move higher.

If producer inflation comes in cooler than anticipated, investors could become more confident that inflation is gradually moving in the right direction.

That could provide additional support for stocks and potentially ease some pressure in the bond market.

Neither outcome guarantees what happens next.

It simply changes the odds.

The Bigger Picture: Inflation Is Improving, but the Fight Isn’t Finished

Americans have spent several years hearing that inflation is slowing while simultaneously wondering why groceries, housing, insurance and everyday expenses still feel expensive.

Both things can be true.

Lower inflation doesn’t necessarily mean prices return to where they were several years ago. It means prices are increasing more slowly.

That’s an important distinction.

The July CPI report provided encouraging signs, but Thursday’s PPI report will help determine whether those improvements are appearing deeper inside the economy.

Meanwhile, Wall Street sits near historic highs, technology companies continue pouring money into artificial intelligence, oil remains vulnerable to geopolitical shocks and investors are trying to anticipate the Federal Reserve’s next decision.

Thursday’s PPI report may look like another percentage buried inside an economic calendar.

In reality, it could influence everything from Treasury yields and technology stocks to expectations for mortgages, car loans and credit cards.

For Wall Street — and Main Street — 8:30 a.m. ET is the number to watch.
