Ferrari Luce ‘Chassis 0’ Sells for an Astonishing $40 Million at Monterey Auction

The Ferrari Luce Chassis 0 became the center of attention at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction after selling for $40 million.

The Ferrari Luce Chassis 0 became the center of attention at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction after selling for $40 million.

MONTEREY, Calif. — Ferrari’s electric era just produced a jaw-dropping auction result.

The 2026 Ferrari Luce “Tailor Made,” known as Chassis 0, sold for an extraordinary $40 million during RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction, turning Ferrari’s first production electric car into one of the biggest automotive stories of Monterey Car Week.

The sale is even more remarkable considering RM Sotheby’s listed the car with a value in excess of $1.1 million before the auction.

The final price was roughly 36 times that $1.1 million figure.

But this wasn’t simply a wealthy collector paying an unbelievable premium for a new Ferrari. The auction was conducted as a charity sale, with Ferrari pledging all proceeds to The Ferrari Foundation to support future educational initiatives.

A $40 Million Piece of Ferrari History

There are rare Ferraris, and then there are cars with a place in the company’s history before they even reach their first owner.

This is the latter.

The Luce sold in Monterey carries the distinction of being “Chassis 0,” the first production chassis of the Ferrari Luce program. The Luce represents Ferrari’s move into fully electric production vehicles and marks a major technological turning point for one of the world’s most famous performance brands.

That makes this particular car something collectors can never recreate.

Ferrari can build another Luce.

It can create another Tailor Made specification.

It can even produce another one-off color combination.

But there can only ever be one Chassis 0.

That historical significance, combined with the charitable nature of the auction and the atmosphere surrounding Monterey Car Week, helped send bidding into territory few could have predicted.

Not Your Average Ferrari Luce

The $40 million car wasn’t configured like a normal production example.

Ferrari created it through its exclusive Tailor Made personalization program, giving Chassis 0 an appearance specifically developed for the car.

According to RM Sotheby’s, the exterior features a special Madreperla Semi-Gloss finish containing a dedicated pigment capable of creating iridescent reflections that shift from green to violet depending on the light and viewing angle.

Inside, Ferrari used Perla Le Mans metallic leather, complemented by Grigio Corvara elements.

The car also receives dedicated wheels, bespoke brake calipers and special Ferrari badging set against an optical-white background.

In other words, the winning bidder didn’t simply purchase the first production Luce.

They purchased a Ferrari-designed historical artifact.

Ferrari’s Electric Gamble Suddenly Has a $40 Million Headline

Ferrari officially revealed the Luce name in February 2026 as part of the rollout of its first fully electric sports car, calling the model the beginning of a new chapter in the company’s history.

Moving into electric vehicles represents a fascinating challenge for Ferrari.

For decades, much of the Ferrari experience has revolved around combustion engines — particularly the unmistakable sound and character of its V8 and V12 powertrains.

The Luce asks Ferrari customers to embrace something fundamentally different.

Whatever enthusiasts think about an electric Ferrari, however, the Monterey auction just gave the Luce an extraordinary piece of history.

A $40 million auction result guarantees this particular car will be talked about for years.

Why Would Anyone Pay $40 Million?

At first glance, the number seems almost impossible to justify.

The pre-auction valuation was above $1.1 million, meaning the winning bidder paid tens of millions beyond what anyone would normally associate with a new production Ferrari.

Yet traditional vehicle valuation isn’t really the point here.

Several forces collided at once:

  • This is Chassis 0.
  • It represents Ferrari’s first production electric-car program.
  • It received a unique Tailor Made specification.
  • It was sold during Monterey Car Week.
  • Most importantly, the sale benefited charity.

That final point changes how the result should be interpreted.

This wasn’t necessarily a buyer deciding that every Ferrari Luce is suddenly worth anything close to $40 million. Instead, it was a wealthy bidder competing for an historically significant automobile while knowing the proceeds would support The Ferrari Foundation’s educational initiatives.

The Most Expensive New Car Ever Sold at Auction?

RM Sotheby’s described the $40 million result on its social media as making the Luce the most expensive new car ever sold at auction.

That distinction matters.

Historic collector cars have crossed the auction block for substantially more money. However, those vehicles often have decades of provenance, racing history, rarity and cultural importance behind them.

The Luce is different.

It’s a 2026 car.

The extraordinary value came immediately.

That makes the result less about depreciation, appreciation or traditional collector-car economics and more about being present at a defining moment in Ferrari history.

Monterey Car Week Delivers Another Wild Result

Monterey has long been one of the most important weeks on the global collector-car calendar.

This year was already expected to feature an exceptional collection of multimillion-dollar automobiles, including everything from modern hypercars to historically important racing machines.

Still, a brand-new electric Ferrari selling for $40 million wasn’t exactly the obvious candidate to dominate the conversation.

It did anyway.

More Than Just an Auction Record

The most important part of this sale may ultimately have little to do with the car itself.

Ferrari says all proceeds from the auction will go toward future educational initiatives through The Ferrari Foundation, which RM Sotheby’s identifies as a recognized 501(c)(3) public charity.

That means one extraordinary evening of bidding generated $40 million for the charitable effort.

And the winning bidder walks away with something that cannot be duplicated: the first production chassis from Ferrari’s electric era.

The Bottom Line

Forty million dollars.

For a brand-new Ferrari.

An electric Ferrari.

It’s the kind of number that makes you look twice to make sure someone didn’t accidentally add another zero.

But that’s exactly what makes the sale fascinating.

The 2026 Ferrari Luce Tailor Made Chassis 0 sold for $40 million at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction, dramatically surpassing its pre-sale valuation and immediately writing itself into Ferrari history.

Whether the Luce eventually becomes one of Ferrari’s most beloved models — or one of its most controversial — remains to be seen.

Chassis 0 doesn’t have to wait for that verdict.

It already has its place in history.

One car. One first production chassis. One enormous charitable contribution. And a $40 million hammer price that Monterey Car Week won’t soon forget.

This Newsroom will continue following Ferrari, Monterey Car Week and the biggest stories shaping the automotive world.
