Ford’s $30,000 Electric Pickup Finally Has a Name: Meet the Ford Fathom

Ford’s upcoming Fathom electric pickup is expected to start below $30,000.

Ford’s upcoming Fathom electric pickup is expected to start below $30,000.

Ford’s push to build a genuinely affordable electric vehicle is getting a lot more real.

The automaker has officially named its upcoming midsize electric pickup the Ford Fathom, giving an identity to the roughly $30,000 truck Ford has been teasing as a major part of its next-generation EV strategy.

And perhaps more importantly, Ford appears to be sticking remarkably close to its promised price.

The Fathom will carry a starting MSRP of $28,350 for the standard-range version. With destination charges included, the price comes to approximately $29,945, keeping Ford’s new electric truck below the psychologically important $30,000 mark.

That could make the Fathom one of the most significant vehicles Ford has introduced in years.

Why Ford Chose the Name “Fathom”

Rather than reviving a historic Ford badge such as Ranchero — a name that had previously been rumored for the truck — Ford is launching an entirely new nameplate.

“Fathom” has nautical roots, traditionally referring to a measurement of depth equal to six feet. The word also means to understand or comprehend something deeply.

Ford says the name connects to the original measurement based on the distance between a person’s outstretched arms, positioning the Fathom as a truck intended to adapt to different lifestyles and customer needs.

The fresh name also signals something larger: Ford does not appear to want this truck viewed simply as an electric version of an existing gasoline vehicle.

The Fathom represents an entirely new approach.

Ford’s New Universal EV Platform

The Ford Fathom will become the first production vehicle built on Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, an architecture designed specifically to produce less expensive electric vehicles at scale.

Ford announced in 2025 that it planned to invest approximately $5 billion in the effort, including upgrades at its Louisville Assembly Plant and battery production at BlueOval Battery Park Michigan.

The company has described the strategy as a fundamental redesign of both the vehicle and the way Ford manufactures it.

Instead of taking an existing gasoline-powered vehicle and converting it into an EV, the Fathom was developed around a dedicated electric architecture from the beginning.

That distinction could be critical.

High vehicle prices have remained one of the largest obstacles preventing broader EV adoption, and Ford has spent the past several years attempting to find a formula that allows electric vehicles to compete economically with traditional gasoline models.

The Fathom is supposed to be that formula.

It’s a Midsize Truck — But Expect Maverick-Like Practicality

Ford officially describes the Fathom as a midsize electric pickup.

There had recently been some confusion after Ford briefly referred to the upcoming vehicle as a “small” truck in company materials. Ford later confirmed that terminology was an error and reiterated that the vehicle will officially compete in the midsize category.

Exact exterior dimensions have not yet been released.

However, Ford has already revealed several clues about what buyers can expect.

The four-door truck will seat five and is expected to provide more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, despite maintaining a relatively compact footprint. The Fathom will also offer both a traditional pickup bed and a front storage compartment, or “frunk.”

Ford has also claimed the truck will deliver acceleration comparable to a Mustang EcoBoost.

That combination — usable passenger space, pickup capability, strong acceleration and a sub-$30,000 starting price — could place the Fathom in an unusual position in the American vehicle market.

Plenty of Technology Comes Standard

Cheap does not necessarily mean stripped down.

Ford has confirmed that every Fathom will be BlueCruise-capable, giving buyers access to Ford’s hands-free highway driving technology.

The truck will also feature a large high-resolution touchscreen, digital key capability, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

Another major feature will be bidirectional power, allowing the battery inside the truck to potentially supply electricity to other devices or equipment.

Ford has not yet released full specifications for the system.

The Biggest Missing Number: Driving Range

One important detail remains unknown.

Ford has not announced the Fathom’s official EPA-estimated driving range.

The $28,350 starting price will apply to a standard-range battery, while a larger battery option is expected to be available.

How much additional range that larger battery provides — and how much more it costs — could ultimately determine how competitive the Fathom becomes.

Battery size, towing capability, payload capacity, charging speeds and detailed trim information also remain under wraps.

Ford is expected to reveal additional specifications as the truck moves closer to production.

Preorders Begin in Early 2027

Ford says preorders for the Fathom will begin in early 2027, with customer deliveries expected afterward.

The truck will be assembled at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky.

A more complete vehicle reveal is expected before orders begin.

Ford Is Trying to Solve the EV Affordability Problem

The Fathom arrives at an important moment for the electric vehicle industry.

For years, automakers have promoted EVs as the future of transportation while simultaneously releasing electric trucks and SUVs carrying prices well above what many mainstream buyers are willing — or able — to spend.

Ford itself experienced that challenge with products such as the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E.

The Fathom represents a different strategy.

Instead of starting with a large, expensive electric vehicle and attempting to reduce its cost later, Ford designed its new platform and manufacturing process around affordability from the beginning.

The company has even developed a new production method sometimes described as an “assembly tree,” where major sections of the vehicle can be constructed separately before being joined together. Ford believes the system can simplify manufacturing and ultimately reduce production costs.

If it works, the technology will extend far beyond one pickup.

Ford has indicated that the Universal EV Platform could eventually support multiple vehicle types, potentially including SUVs, vans and other affordable electric models.

The Bottom Line

The Ford Fathom may ultimately be more important than another electric pickup entering the market.

It is Ford’s attempt to answer one of the most difficult questions facing the EV industry:

Can an American automaker build an electric vehicle people actually want at a price millions of mainstream buyers can realistically afford?

At $28,350 before destination charges, the Fathom is starting with an aggressive answer.

Now Ford has to deliver the range, reliability, capability and production volume necessary to make that price matter.

If it does, the Fathom could become less of an experimental EV and more of something the electric market has been waiting for:

A normal, useful truck at a normal-vehicle price.
