Record ocean temperatures are putting renewed attention on the enormous amount of heat accumulating in the world’s oceans.
The planet just crossed another extraordinary climate threshold — this time in the water.
On August 22, 2026, the average sea-surface temperature across much of the world’s oceans reached 21.1°C, or about 70°F, according to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service. That is the highest daily global sea-surface temperature in the dataset, narrowly surpassing the previous record of 21.09°C established in March 2024.
A difference of one-hundredth of a degree might sound insignificant. Across an enormous portion of the planet’s ocean surface, however, the bigger story is not that single number — it is the persistence of unusually warm water and the long-term accumulation of heat beneath the surface.
And that matters far beyond the beach.
The Record Comes Earlier Than Expected
The timing makes the new record particularly notable.
Copernicus reported earlier this summer that global sea-surface temperatures were already breaking records for the time of year. On June 21, its climate dataset measured an average of 20.86°C, slightly above comparable 2023 and 2024 levels.
Then came August.
Copernicus confirmed on August 24 that the daily average had climbed to 21.1°C on August 22, officially overtaking 2024’s previous all-time daily record.
The measurements cover the extra-polar ocean between 60° south and 60° north, rather than literally every body of ocean water on Earth.

The World Meteorological Organization announced the onset of El Niño conditions in the equatorial Pacific in June, and Copernicus says the phenomenon is contributing to this year’s exceptionally warm ocean temperatures.
El Niño occurs when waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific become unusually warm, altering atmospheric circulation and influencing weather around the globe.
But El Niño isn’t the entire explanation.
The oceans were already running exceptionally hot before the current event. Research published in Nature found that ocean surface temperatures remained at record levels for more than a year beginning in April 2023, exceeding the previous 2015–2016 record by an average of about 0.25°C over that 12-month period.

In 2024, the annual average extra-polar sea-surface temperature reached a then-record 20.87°C, approximately 0.51°C above the 1991–2020 average.
NOAA’s State of the Climate assessment also found that marine heatwaves occurred across an extraordinary 91% of the global ocean during 2024.
Then ocean heat content reached another record in 2025.
Now, in August 2026, the daily sea-surface temperature record has fallen again.
That sequence is more important than any single headline.

Scientists will now be watching how ocean temperatures behave through the remainder of 2026 and as the developing El Niño evolves.
Among the biggest questions are how long these extraordinarily warm conditions persist, whether additional daily records fall, how marine ecosystems respond and what the added ocean heat could mean for weather patterns over the coming months.
There is also an important distinction worth remembering: a record daily ocean-surface temperature does not mean every ocean, sea or coastline is simultaneously experiencing record heat.
Temperatures vary enormously by region.
But a global average reaching unprecedented territory tells us something much larger is happening across the system.
The oceans cover roughly 70% of Earth’s surface and contain an almost unimaginable amount of thermal energy. Moving their global average temperature is difficult.
