Hayden Panettiere is being remembered for a career that stretched from childhood roles to acclaimed performances in Heroes and Nashville.

By This Newsroom | August 17, 2026

Actress Hayden Panettiere, the former child star who grew into one of television’s most recognizable faces through Heroes and Nashville, has died. She was just 36 years old.

Panettiere died Sunday, August 16, according to her family and representative. Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed the devastating news in a statement released through her publicist.

No official cause of death has been announced.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. Preliminary information from police indicated there were no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.

The sudden loss has sent shockwaves through Hollywood and among generations of fans who watched Panettiere grow up on screen.

From Child Star to Hollywood Standout

Panettiere spent virtually her entire life in entertainment.

Born August 21, 1989, in Palisades, New York, she began appearing in commercials as a young child before landing television roles, including work on the soap operas One Life to Live and Guiding Light.

Her early film career included one of the most recognizable sports movies of its generation: Disney’s Remember the Titans. Panettiere played Sheryl Yoast, the football-obsessed daughter of assistant coach Bill Yoast.

As she grew older, Panettiere successfully made the difficult transition from child performer to adult star.

Then came the role that changed everything.

“Save the Cheerleader, Save the World”

In 2006, Panettiere became a pop-culture phenomenon as Claire Bennet on NBC’s Heroes.

Her character — a high school cheerleader with the ability to rapidly heal from seemingly fatal injuries — became central to the show’s mythology.

The phrase associated with the show’s first season, “Save the cheerleader, save the world,” became one of television’s most recognizable taglines of the era.

Panettiere’s performance helped make her one of the defining young television stars of the late 2000s. She earned multiple Teen Choice Awards during the show’s run.

A New Chapter With ‘Nashville’

Panettiere reinvented herself again in 2012 when she took on the role of country music superstar Juliette Barnes in ABC’s Nashville.

The character was talented, ambitious, complicated and frequently vulnerable — qualities Panettiere brought to life over six seasons.

The role also allowed audiences to see another side of her talent: her voice.

Panettiere performed numerous songs for the series and earned two Golden Globe nominations for her portrayal of Juliette.

Her career also included appearances in Scream 4, Scream VI, I Love You, Beth Cooper and numerous other film and television projects.

Speaking Openly About Her Personal Battles

Away from the screen, Panettiere became increasingly candid about the difficult realities behind her fame.

She publicly discussed experiencing postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter, Kaya, in 2014. She also spoke about her struggles with alcohol and addiction and her efforts to recover.

Rather than hide those chapters of her life, Panettiere eventually chose to talk about them publicly.

Earlier this year, she released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, detailing her experiences growing up in Hollywood, motherhood, addiction, recovery and the darker sides of life as a child star.

In one of her final public appearances promoting the book, Panettiere reflected on the legacy she hoped to leave behind.

She spoke about wanting to make a positive difference in the lives of others and particularly encouraged mothers going through difficult circumstances.

Those comments carry additional weight following her death.

Another Devastating Loss for the Panettiere Family

Her death comes just three years after the sudden loss of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, who died in February 2023 at only 28 years old.

Jansen’s family later said his death resulted from an enlarged heart and complications involving the aortic valve.

Hayden spoke publicly about the enormous impact her brother’s death had on her.

Now, her family is confronting another unimaginable loss.

Panettiere is survived by her parents and her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former fiancé and Ukrainian boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Hollywood Remembers Hayden Panettiere

Tributes began appearing across social media shortly after news of her death broke.

Actors and entertainers including Viola Davis, Bethany Joy Lenz, Selma Blair and Kelly Osbourne were among those publicly remembering Panettiere and expressing their condolences.

SAG-AFTRA also honored Panettiere, recognizing her decades-long career and contributions to the entertainment industry.

For many fans, however, the grief feels unusually personal.

They didn’t simply discover Hayden Panettiere as an established celebrity.

They watched her grow up.

From the little girl in Remember the Titans, to the indestructible cheerleader in Heroes, to the deeply complicated country star of Nashville, Panettiere spent decades appearing in the living rooms of millions of people.

A Life That Was More Than Its Struggles

As details surrounding Panettiere’s death continue to emerge, there will inevitably be attention surrounding how she died.

But her life should not be reduced to its final hours.

Hayden Panettiere was a daughter, sister and mother. She was a performer who began working before she was old enough to understand fame and somehow navigated the transition from child actor to internationally recognized star.

She was also someone willing to publicly acknowledge that success and celebrity don’t make a person immune from pain.

That openness became an important part of her later life.

Panettiere would have turned 37 on August 21.

Instead, Hollywood is mourning a performer whose life ended far too soon — while millions of fans remember the characters, performances and moments she left behind.

Hayden Panettiere was 36.
