Japan’s First Flying Car? Not So Fast. Here’s What’s Really Happening

Sony isn't launching a flying car—but Japan is making major strides toward the future of urban air mobility.

The internet is once again buzzing over a futuristic-looking vehicle with the headline: “Japan’s first flying car is officially ready for the market.” The sleek black aircraft, complete with glowing orange lights and a prominent Sony logo, certainly looks like something straight out of a science fiction movie.

But is Sony really about to sell a flying car?

The short answer is no.

The Viral Claim

Social media posts have been circulating claiming that Sony has developed Japan’s first flying car and plans to launch it commercially in 2026. The videos often describe an autonomous, environmentally friendly aircraft that will revolutionize transportation.

Unfortunately, much of that narrative isn’t supported by reality.

Sony Isn’t Building a Flying Car

Sony’s transportation ambitions have focused on electric vehicles, not flying cars.

The company’s automotive project, AFEELA, was created through a joint venture between Sony and Honda called Sony Honda Mobility. The vehicle is a premium electric sedan packed with entertainment technology, AI features, advanced driver assistance systems, and Sony’s digital ecosystem.

It never had wings.

In fact, the project recently hit a major setback. Sony Honda Mobility announced it was discontinuing development and launch of the AFEELA 1 and its second planned model after Honda reevaluated its EV strategy. Reservation holders are receiving refunds as the companies reassess their future mobility plans.

So What Is Japan’s Flying Car?

Japan is absolutely investing heavily in eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft.

Companies such as:

  • SkyDrive
  • Toyota-backed aviation projects
  • Honda’s future aviation concepts

are working toward creating air taxis that can transport passengers over congested cities.

These aircraft are much closer to helicopters than traditional automobiles. Most aren’t designed to drive on public roads at all.

Several demonstration flights have already taken place in Japan, with hopes of introducing commercial air taxi services over the next decade as regulations mature.

Why Flying Cars Are So Difficult

Even though the technology has advanced rapidly, several challenges remain before flying vehicles become commonplace.

Safety

Every aircraft requires extensive certification. Autonomous passenger flight raises an entirely new level of regulatory scrutiny.

Battery Technology

Flying consumes enormous amounts of energy. Current battery technology limits range and payload capacity.

Air Traffic Management

Imagine thousands of flying vehicles above major cities.

Entirely new air traffic systems will be needed to prevent collisions and safely coordinate routes.

Cost

Early flying vehicles are expected to cost hundreds of thousands—or even millions—of dollars, placing them well beyond the average consumer.

The Future Is Still Coming

While a personal flying car parked in your garage isn’t arriving next year, urban air mobility is progressing faster than many expected.

Industry experts believe we’ll likely see:

  • Airport shuttle air taxis
  • Emergency medical transport
  • Cargo delivery aircraft
  • Limited commuter routes

before privately owned flying cars become common.

The Bottom Line

The viral post showing a Sony flying car ready for market is misleading.

Sony’s automotive effort centered on the AFEELA electric vehicle, not a flying automobile, and that program has itself been scaled back following strategic changes between Sony and Honda.

That doesn’t mean the dream of flying cars is dead.

Japan remains one of the world’s leaders in developing next-generation air mobility, and while your daily commute probably won’t involve taking off from your driveway anytime soon, the age of commercial air taxis is getting closer with every passing year.

One thing is certain: the future of transportation is changing—but it may look a little different than the viral videos suggest.
