For a few hours Thursday, the AI-powered internet suddenly looked a lot less reliable.
Several of the world’s most widely used artificial intelligence platforms experienced significant service problems on September 3, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and xAI’s Grok suffering confirmed outages or elevated error rates during overlapping periods. Users also reported problems accessing Google Gemini, although the evidence around Gemini is less clear-cut than some viral social media posts suggest.
The unusual timing quickly attracted attention because these platforms normally compete against one another as alternatives. When one AI service goes down, users often simply move to another.
On Thursday, that backup plan did not always work.
ChatGPT, Claude and Grok All Experienced Problems
OpenAI officially acknowledged an incident involving “elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex.”
According to the company’s status information, OpenAI began investigating the incident Thursday afternoon before deploying mitigation measures and ultimately resolving the problem. Fifteen ChatGPT components and four Codex components were listed as affected.
OpenAI’s incident history now lists the September 3 disruption as resolved.
Anthropic was dealing with problems of its own. The company reported elevated errors affecting Claude models and eventually deployed a fix. Ars Technica reported that Anthropic first acknowledged a partial outage at approximately 9:23 a.m. Eastern and said the incident had been resolved by 12:16 p.m.
Then there was Grok.
xAI’s AI assistant experienced a significant disruption tied to its Memphis computing infrastructure. SpaceXAI later apologized for the outage, saying problems at its Memphis compute center affected Grok as well as unnamed computing partners. The Grok disruption reportedly lasted more than three hours.
By later Thursday, ChatGPT, Claude and Grok had returned to normal operation.
What About Google Gemini?
This is where some of the viral posts circulating online need additional context.
Downdetector and users reported problems with Google Gemini during roughly the same broader period. Some reports therefore characterized the event as four major AI platforms experiencing simultaneous problems.
However, other reporting found that Gemini remained available while ChatGPT, Claude and Grok suffered their confirmed outages. Google’s public cloud incident history also does not currently show a comparable September 3 Gemini incident.
In other words, it would be premature to say definitively that every major AI platform completely went offline simultaneously.
The more defensible conclusion is still remarkable: several of the biggest AI services experienced overlapping disruptions, while users reported additional issues elsewhere.
Why Did So Many AI Platforms Have Problems at the Same Time?
That is the biggest unanswered question.
There is currently no verified evidence that one single event caused every outage.
It is tempting to look at simultaneous failures and assume a massive cyberattack or common infrastructure collapse. However, no affected AI company has publicly established that explanation.
Grok’s outage has specifically been connected to its Memphis compute center. Claude’s problems were described as an infrastructure issue, while OpenAI acknowledged elevated errors and deployed mitigation.
Until the companies disclose more technical details, claims that all the outages were caused by the same underlying failure remain speculation.
That distinction matters.
AI Is Becoming Critical Infrastructure
The larger story isn’t simply that a few chatbots stopped working.
AI platforms are rapidly becoming embedded into everyday business operations.
Companies now depend on generative AI for software development, customer service, research, marketing, data analysis, document creation, communications and increasingly sophisticated autonomous workflows.
A chatbot outage might have been an inconvenience several years ago.
Today, it can interrupt actual business operations.
And as companies build AI agents capable of performing multi-step tasks automatically, reliability becomes even more important. An employee can wait an hour for ChatGPT to return. An automated system that depends on an AI API to complete thousands of transactions presents an entirely different problem.
The AI Industry Has a Redundancy Problem
Thursday’s disruption also highlighted an uncomfortable reality.
Having subscriptions to several AI platforms doesn’t necessarily provide the level of redundancy businesses might expect.
Organizations increasingly build workflows around multiple models. ChatGPT might handle one task, Claude another and Gemini or Grok another.
That appears diversified.
But the infrastructure underneath the AI economy is considerably more interconnected. AI companies rely on enormous data centers, cloud infrastructure, networking providers, specialized chips, power systems and other shared components.
When failures occur at the infrastructure layer, multiple services can potentially experience problems at roughly the same time—even when the AI companies themselves are direct competitors.
Thursday offered a glimpse of what that dependence can look like.
The AI Era Just Got a Reliability Warning
The outages were temporary. ChatGPT, Claude and Grok recovered, and millions of users returned to their normal workflows.
But the event should still get the attention of businesses betting heavily on artificial intelligence.
The AI race has largely focused on which company has the smartest model.
Soon, another question may become equally important:
Which AI platform can businesses depend on when they absolutely need it?
Because as artificial intelligence moves from an optional productivity tool into the infrastructure powering companies, applications and autonomous agents, uptime isn’t simply a technical metric anymore.
It becomes part of the economy.
And September 3, 2026 provided a reminder that even the most advanced AI systems in the world still depend on very traditional things—servers, networks, data centers, electricity and infrastructure that can fail.
