The monarch of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom became king when he was just three years old, making him the world’s youngest reigning monarch. His death at only 34 has stunned Uganda and brought an extraordinary 31-year reign to an end.
Uganda is mourning the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the longtime monarch of the Tooro Kingdom, who has died at the age of 34.
The Tooro Kingdom officially announced that King Oyo died at approximately 10 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki described his death as an “immeasurable loss” for the royal family, the people of Tooro and Uganda.
King Oyo had reportedly been critically ill and receiving medical treatment in the United States before his death. Officials have not publicly disclosed an official cause of death.
His passing ends one of the most unusual royal stories of the modern era.
He Became King at Just Three Years Old
King Oyo was born on April 16, 1992, in Kampala, Uganda.
His life changed dramatically three years later when his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, died on August 26, 1995. The young Oyo subsequently ascended the throne of the Tooro Kingdom on September 12, 1995.
He was only three.
His accession made international headlines and established him as the world’s youngest reigning monarch. Because of his age, regents and members of the royal family helped oversee the kingdom until Oyo reached adulthood.
He later assumed his full royal responsibilities as an adult.
The images of a tiny child dressed in elaborate royal clothing became internationally recognizable and helped earn him the nickname “boy king.”
But what began as an extraordinary childhood eventually developed into a reign spanning nearly 31 years.
What Is the Tooro Kingdom?
The Tooro Kingdom is a traditional monarchy in western Uganda centered around the city of Fort Portal.
Uganda operates as a republic with an elected government, meaning King Oyo did not wield the type of political authority traditionally associated with an absolute monarch.
Instead, traditional kingdoms such as Tooro maintain important cultural and social roles, preserving customs, heritage and community identity.
For the Batooro people, King Oyo therefore represented much more than a ceremonial title.
He became one of the most recognizable symbols of their cultural identity.
A Modern King With a Global Profile
As King Oyo grew older, he faced an unusual challenge: maintaining centuries-old traditions while representing a younger generation of Ugandans.
During his reign, he promoted causes that included education, youth development, environmental conservation and HIV/AIDS awareness. He also supported long-term development initiatives within the Tooro Kingdom.
His unusually young age also distinguished him from many other traditional leaders.
Rather than inheriting the throne as an adult, Oyo essentially grew up alongside the institution he represented.

His father died on August 26, 1995.
King Oyo’s death was confirmed on August 27, 2026 — 31 years and one day later. He was also only weeks away from marking the 31st anniversary of his accession to the throne on September 12.
The timing has added another emotional dimension to the mourning now taking place across the kingdom.
Uganda Reacts to King Oyo’s Death
News of the king’s death triggered tributes from political figures, cultural leaders and Ugandans across the country.
The announcement surprised many people because the severity of his illness had not been widely known. Reports concerning his condition circulated shortly before officials confirmed his death.
Leaders from other Ugandan cultural institutions have also expressed condolences and described King Oyo’s death as a significant loss for the country.
At only 34, his death has created particular shock because of how closely several generations of Ugandans associated him with the Tooro throne.
For many, there had effectively never been another Tooro king during their lifetime.
Who Will Become the Next King of Tooro?

The Tooro Kingdom says the monarchy will continue.
