Tesla Powershare Home Backup Arrives for Model 3 and Model Y

Tesla has turned on home backup power for new Model 3 and Model Y cars. Here is who qualifies, what you need and what it costs.

Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y can now send power to a home during an outage.

Tesla Powershare home backup is finally coming to the two cars most people actually buy. On Oct. 6, Tesla turned the feature on for new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, so the car in your garage can now keep the lights on during an outage.

Until now, only the Cybertruck could do this. Tesla Energy announced the change in a post on X, saying the feature can “extend your home backup by over 2 days with your vehicle.” It is one more sign that Tesla’s lineup is changing fast, as our look at Tesla’s 2027 lineup shows.

How Tesla Powershare Home Backup Works

Think of it as a giant spare battery that happens to drive. When the grid goes down, the car sends power back into your house through a Powerwall 3. That setup is called vehicle-to-home, or V2H.

Tesla’s numbers are generous. On its Powershare page, the company says a Model 3 or Model Y adds over two days of backup. That assumes a full battery and a home that uses 30 kWh a day. Maximum output is 11.5 kW. Those are Tesla’s own estimates, not independent test results.

The Cybertruck still wins this contest. Tesla says it adds over three days.

Who Qualifies for the Powershare Feature

Here’s where the cheerful press release gets a little less cheerful. Tesla says the Powershare feature is available for new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered on or after Oct. 1, 2026. The footnote limits that to the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

What about cars already in driveways? Tesla says some earlier vehicles also work. It does not promise every one of them will. Owners can check by opening Software, then Additional Vehicle Info, and looking for “Powershare Support: Enabled.”

Your house needs the right gear too. The setup requires a Powerwall 3 and either a Universal Wall Connector or a Gen 3 Wall Connector, according to Tesla’s own configuration guide. Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ owners get a “coming soon” and no date.

Here’s the Thing: What Tesla Home Backup Costs

So who is this really for? Mostly people who already own Tesla’s home battery. If you already have a Powerwall 3 and a Wall Connector, Tesla says you need no extra equipment to use Tesla Powershare home backup.

Starting from scratch is another story. Canary Media reports a Powerwall 3 retails for $8,200, plus several thousand dollars for installation. The Wall Connector adds $595. That is a serious bill for a backup plan.

Still, Tesla’s approach is clever. Most U.S. home-backup systems for EVs need a pricey DC bidirectional charger. Tesla builds the power conversion into the car instead. That is why a standard wall charger is enough.

Late to the Party, Not Free of Limits

Let’s be fair about the timeline. Ford’s F-150 Lightning has offered home backup since 2022, as Notebookcheck notes. Electrek’s headline says rivals got here years ago. Tesla is not first. It is just the biggest.

There is also a catch for anyone hoping to make money. Notebookcheck says this setup is V2H only. There is no vehicle-to-grid option, so Model 3 and Model Y owners cannot sell power back during peak demand. That limit makes V2H power purely a defensive play for now.

Two questions are still open. Tesla has not said exactly which older cars qualify. It also has not said when Powerwall 2 support arrives. Expect owners to be asking both loudly. Meanwhile, Tesla’s attention is split across other projects, from the new Semi factory in Nevada to the October 1 Roadster reveal.

Bottom line: with Tesla Powershare home backup, Tesla’s most popular cars can now double as a backup generator that never needs gas. Whether that is worth $8,000-plus is a question your electric bill, and your local utility, will help answer.
