Lando Norris will remain with McLaren through at least the end of the 2030 Formula 1 season.
The reigning Formula 1 World Champion is staying in papaya for the long haul, signing a massive extension with McLaren that could keep one of the sport’s most successful modern partnerships together well into the next decade.
Lando Norris and McLaren are not breaking up anytime soon.
McLaren confirmed Saturday that Norris has signed a new contract keeping the reigning Formula 1 Drivers’ World Champion with the team through at least the end of the 2030 season, with a multi-year option that could extend the partnership even further.
And McLaren added one extraordinary bonus to the deal.
Norris will receive an actual McLaren MCL39 from his 2025 World Championship-winning season — the car generation that helped deliver the biggest achievement of his career.
For a driver who essentially grew up inside McLaren, it feels less like another contract and more like a commitment to finish what he started.
Norris and McLaren Are Betting on Each Other
Norris joined McLaren’s junior program in 2017 as a teenager before becoming a full-time Formula 1 driver in 2019.
Nine years after initially walking through the doors in Woking, he is now a Formula 1 World Champion.
His numbers tell the story.
Through McLaren’s announcement, Norris has accumulated 163 Grand Prix starts, 13 victories, 18 pole positions and 48 podium finishes with the organization. He has also helped McLaren capture two Constructors’ Championships and, most importantly, claimed the 2025 Drivers’ World Championship.
Those 163 starts also make Norris the driver with the most Grand Prix appearances for McLaren in the team’s history.
Now the relationship is set to continue for at least four more seasons.
“McLaren is my home, and I’m very pleased to be signing a new contract to keep me with the team until at least 2030,” Norris said.
It is a remarkable statement considering how quickly Formula 1’s driver market can change.
Norris could almost certainly have attracted interest elsewhere. Instead, he chose stability.
From Rebuilding McLaren to Winning the World Championship
The significance of the extension goes beyond Norris simply remaining with a competitive team.
He stayed through McLaren’s rebuilding years.
When Norris entered Formula 1 in 2019, McLaren was still trying to restore itself as a championship-caliber organization. The team gradually climbed back toward the front before emerging as one of F1’s dominant forces.
Then came the breakthrough.
McLaren captured consecutive Constructors’ Championships in 2024 and 2025, while Norris delivered the team’s first Drivers’ Championship since Lewis Hamilton won the title in 2008.
Norris described those objectives as part of the plan from the beginning.
He wanted to help return McLaren to the front.
He wanted championships.
Now that they have accomplished both, Norris says the goal has shifted from reaching the summit to staying there.
“We’ve achieved that goal, but we want more,” Norris said. “We want to keep on winning.”
McLaren Gives Norris His MCL39
Then there’s the car.
As part of the celebration surrounding the new contract, McLaren announced Norris will be gifted an MCL39 that he raced during his 2025 championship season.
For a Formula 1 driver, that’s considerably more meaningful than another trophy sitting on a shelf.
The MCL39 represents the season Norris finally reached the top of Formula 1.
It was also part of a historic year for McLaren. The organization secured its second consecutive Constructors’ Championship while Norris became its first Drivers’ Champion in 17 years.
That makes the car a legitimate piece of McLaren and Formula 1 history.
How Much Is Norris’ New McLaren Contract Worth?
McLaren did not disclose financial terms in its official announcement.
However, reports in the British media have placed the extension at approximately £120 million, potentially worth around £30 million per season. Those figures should be treated as reported estimates rather than official numbers from McLaren.
If accurate, the contract would further establish Norris among Formula 1’s highest-paid drivers.
Norris himself has acknowledged that his compensation increased, while indicating some reported figures surrounding his contract have been exaggerated.
Regardless of the exact number, McLaren’s message is obvious: Norris is one of the foundational pieces of its Formula 1 future.
What This Means for Oscar Piastri
The Norris announcement also gives McLaren something incredibly valuable in Formula 1: continuity.
Oscar Piastri already has a long-term commitment to McLaren, meaning the organization can continue building around one of the strongest driver pairings on the grid rather than preparing for another major driver-market shakeup.
Team Principal Andrea Stella specifically highlighted that advantage.
According to Stella, keeping Norris provides important continuity while reinforcing McLaren’s confidence in the direction of the team.
He also described the Norris-Piastri combination as one of Formula 1’s strongest and most united partnerships.
That could become increasingly important as Formula 1 enters a new technical era and teams fight to establish the next period of dominance.
Norris Could Spend His Entire F1 Career With McLaren
Perhaps the most fascinating part of the deal is what happens if Norris actually completes it.
By the end of 2030, Norris will be 31 years old and will have completed 12 Formula 1 seasons as a McLaren race driver. That would equal Lewis Hamilton’s 12-season tenure with Mercedes.
And Norris hasn’t hidden the possibility that McLaren could be the only Formula 1 team he ever drives for.
He told the BBC there had been interest from elsewhere but that he didn’t want to leave McLaren, calling the decision to stay one of the easiest he has made in Formula 1.
That kind of loyalty has become increasingly rare in modern professional sports.
It also says plenty about what McLaren has built.
McLaren’s New Papaya Era Is Officially Built Around Lando Norris
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has watched Norris develop from a promising teenager into a Formula 1 World Champion.
Now he wants him around for the next chapter.
Brown credited Norris, Stella, Piastri and the wider organization with helping transform McLaren from a struggling team into consecutive Constructors’ Champions and a Drivers’ Championship winner.
The transformation has been dramatic.
McLaren didn’t simply return to relevance.
It returned to the top.
And instead of using his championship to explore what Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull or another organization might eventually offer, Norris has decided that the best place to chase his next title is the same place he won his first.
There is something fitting about that.
McLaren invested in Norris before he became an F1 superstar. Norris remained committed while McLaren rebuilt itself.
Eventually, they reached the top together.
Now they have until at least 2030 to find out just how many more championships they can win.
And somewhere in Norris’ collection will sit an MCL39 — a permanent reminder of the season that proved the partnership worked.
