United Airlines Is Redefining Economy With a New Extra-Legroom Seating Option

United Airlines Unveils Economy Row With Extra Legroom

CHICAGO — United Airlines is introducing a new twist on economy travel that could make long-haul flights significantly more comfortable—without upgrading to business class.

The airline announced Tuesday that it will roll out a redesigned Economy Plus seating option on its new Airbus A321XLR aircraft, featuring a permanently open middle seat that has been transformed into a shared table. The result? More personal space, more elbow room, and a noticeably roomier experience for passengers seated in the aisle and window seats.

A New Take on Economy Travel

Rather than squeezing another passenger into the middle seat, United has permanently replaced it with a wide table stretching between the remaining two seats. The shared surface includes cup holders and provides extra space for laptops, meals, and personal items while giving travelers more room to spread out.

The concept is similar to the “Eurobusiness” seating arrangement commonly used by European airlines, but it marks the first time a major U.S. airline has introduced the design as a premium economy offering.

Who Gets the Upgrade?

The new seats will be sold as part of Economy Plus, United’s extra-legroom cabin.

Passengers booking these seats will receive:

  • Extra legroom
  • Guaranteed empty middle seat
  • Shared center table with cup holders
  • Additional elbow and shoulder space
  • Easier access to work, dining, and entertainment during flight

United says the new option will go on sale later this year, with pricing announced closer to launch.

Coming First to the Airbus A321XLR

The innovative seating will debut on United’s fleet of 50 Airbus A321XLR aircraft, which are scheduled to begin domestic service in fall 2026 before expanding to international routes in early 2027.

The aircraft itself represents one of United’s biggest cabin upgrades in years and will also feature:

  • United Polaris® lie-flat business suites
  • Premium Plus seating
  • 4K OLED entertainment screens
  • Bluetooth audio connectivity
  • Larger overhead bins
  • Self-service snack station
  • Faster onboard connectivity

The A321XLR will gradually replace aging Boeing 757 aircraft on many transatlantic routes.

Part of United’s Premium Push

This announcement continues United’s broader strategy of adding more premium travel choices without requiring passengers to purchase business class.

Earlier this year, the airline unveiled its upcoming United Relax Row, a couch-style economy seating concept designed for families and long-haul travelers that converts a full row into a sleeping surface beginning in 2027.

By expanding premium economy options, United hopes to capture travelers willing to pay a little more for noticeably greater comfort.

Will Travelers Pay More?

Many frequent flyers have long said the middle seat is the least desirable place on an airplane. By permanently removing it from select rows, United is betting passengers will happily pay for additional space rather than gamble on whether a flight fills completely.

For travelers who don’t need business class but want a more comfortable journey, the new Economy Plus option may become one of the airline’s most popular upgrades.

As airlines continue searching for ways to improve the passenger experience while generating additional revenue, United’s latest cabin innovation could signal a new direction for economy travel in the United States.
