Samsung Layoffs Hit Hundreds as U.S. HQ Moves to Plano
PLANO, Texas — Samsung Electronics is moving forward with a major restructuring of its U.S. operations. The company will cut hundreds of jobs while relocating its American headquarters from Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, to Plano, Texas.
Samsung announced that 739 employees in New Jersey will either lose their jobs or receive relocation offers as the company consolidates its consumer electronics operations in North Texas. However, the move also affects Texas workers. Reports indicate at least 100 employees in Plano will also lose their jobs during the restructuring.
A Headquarters Move Years in the Making
Samsung invested heavily in its Legacy West-area campus after announcing plans several years ago to expand its presence in Plano. The company expects to complete the headquarters relocation by the end of 2026, making Plano the center of its U.S. consumer electronics business.
The move strengthens North Texas’ reputation as one of America’s fastest-growing technology hubs. However, it also demonstrates the difficult decisions companies make during large-scale reorganizations.
Company leaders say the layoffs reflect changing business priorities rather than the relocation itself.
AI Is Reshaping Samsung’s Strategy
Samsung is shifting more resources toward businesses experiencing stronger growth, especially semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
Its semiconductor division continues to benefit from strong demand for AI chips and advanced memory products. Meanwhile, its traditional consumer electronics business, including televisions and home appliances, has faced slower sales and tougher competition.
Instead of expanding every division equally, Samsung is investing more heavily in areas that generate stronger long-term growth.
Many technology companies have adopted the same strategy.
Texas Continues to Attract Major Companies
Despite the layoffs, the headquarters relocation represents another major corporate win for Texas.
Plano continues attracting Fortune 500 companies because of its business-friendly environment, lower operating costs, skilled workforce, central location, and excellent transportation infrastructure.
Samsung also continues investing billions of dollars in Texas manufacturing. The company operates major semiconductor facilities in Austin and is building a massive chip fabrication plant in Taylor, Texas.
Those investments remain separate from the consumer electronics restructuring.
Why Are Plano Employees Losing Jobs Too?
Many North Texans may wonder why local employees are losing jobs if Samsung is moving its headquarters to Plano.
The answer is simple. Companies often eliminate duplicate positions when they consolidate offices. Departments such as finance, human resources, marketing, administration, and operations frequently overlap after a headquarters move.
Rather than relocating every employee, Samsung is restructuring its workforce to match its future business priorities.
The Bigger Picture
Samsung is far from alone.
Many of the world’s largest technology companies have reduced headcounts over the past two years. At the same time, they have dramatically increased investments in artificial intelligence.
These workforce reductions often reflect long-term business strategy instead of financial distress.
Still, that distinction offers little comfort to employees who lose their jobs.
What Happens Next?
Samsung expects to complete its headquarters transition before the end of the year.
North Texas will gain a larger corporate footprint. However, the transition will also bring short-term job losses to workers in both New Jersey and Texas.
As artificial intelligence continues reshaping the technology industry, Samsung’s decision highlights a growing trend. Even expanding companies are redefining the skills, roles, and workforce they need for the future.
