USA Today Ranks Top 25 College Football Programs for 2026 — Alabama Ahead of Georgia?

College football fans know one thing to be true: rankings exist to be debated.

With kickoff for the 2026 season just around the corner, USA Today released its list of the Top 25 college football programs entering the season, evaluating schools based on long-term success, tradition, recruiting, brand power, and their current position in the sport. The rankings were summarized by On3 and have already sparked plenty of conversation across college football.

While much of the list makes sense, one particular decision has social media buzzing:

How is Alabama ranked ahead of Georgia?

That’s where things get interesting.

Ohio State at No. 1? Few Will Argue.

The Buckeyes have become one of the sport’s premier programs over the past two decades.

They recruit at an elite level every year, consistently compete for Big Ten championships, regularly reach the College Football Playoff, and recently added another national championship under Ryan Day. On paper, it’s difficult to argue against Ohio State opening 2026 as the nation’s premier program.

But Alabama Over Georgia?

Now we’re talking.

If these rankings are based on program prestige over several decades, Alabama has an incredible résumé.

No argument there.

Nick Saban built arguably the greatest dynasty college football has ever seen, and Alabama remains one of the biggest brands in American sports.

However…

If this ranking also factors in where programs currently stand, Georgia’s case becomes extremely compelling.

Under Kirby Smart, Georgia has:

  • Won multiple national championships in recent years
  • Dominated SEC recruiting
  • Consistently finished among the nation’s elite
  • Been a perennial College Football Playoff contender
  • Maintained one of college football’s deepest rosters

Meanwhile, Alabama has been navigating life after Saban and, while still nationally relevant, has not matched Georgia’s sustained on-field dominance during the Kirby Smart era. Georgia continues to recruit at an elite level and remains one of the sport’s benchmark programs entering 2026.

The “Current Program” Test

Here’s where the debate gets fun.

If someone asked:

“Which program would you rather inherit today?”

Many fans would likely have Georgia very near the top of that conversation.

The Bulldogs have:

  • Elite recruiting pipelines
  • Stability under Kirby Smart
  • NFL-level player development
  • One of the nation’s strongest defenses year after year
  • Consistent championship expectations

That doesn’t diminish Alabama’s history.

It simply reflects where many observers believe the programs stand today.

Georgia Fans Already Know…

Let’s be honest.

Bulldog fans probably saw Alabama at No. 2 and immediately started typing.

It’s one thing to respect Alabama’s incredible history.

It’s another to suggest Georgia hasn’t overtaken them in the current era.

That distinction is exactly why this ranking is generating so much discussion.

Other Rankings That Stand Out

Miami at No. 9

The Hurricanes deserve credit for their resurgence under Mario Cristobal.

Recruiting has improved dramatically, and Miami has re-entered the national conversation.

Still, some fans may wonder whether Miami has accomplished enough recently to rank ahead of programs like Oregon or Penn State.

Indiana at No. 17

Perhaps the biggest surprise.

Indiana has enjoyed remarkable recent success, but being placed behind several traditional powers despite an extraordinary run illustrates how heavily these rankings weigh long-term program history alongside recent performance.

Nebraska Still Hanging Around

Seeing Nebraska inside the Top 20 reminds fans just how much tradition still matters.

The Cornhuskers remain one of college football’s iconic brands, even as they continue chasing a return to national prominence.

The Beauty of College Football

No sport debates rankings quite like college football.

Fans measure greatness differently.

Some value championships.

Others prioritize recent success.

Some look at recruiting.

Others emphasize historical accomplishments spanning generations.

That’s exactly why lists like this become instant conversation starters.

Whether you’re an Ohio State supporter, a Texas believer, a Miami optimist—or especially a Georgia fan—the arguments are part of what makes Saturdays in the fall so special.

Final Thoughts

USA Today’s Top 25 serves as an entertaining snapshot of college football entering the 2026 season, blending history, prestige, sustained success, and current relevance into one ranking. While Ohio State at No. 1 will earn broad support, the placement of Alabama ahead of Georgia is likely to remain the hottest debate. Alabama’s historical résumé is unmatched, but Georgia’s sustained success under Kirby Smart has many fans believing the Bulldogs have become the SEC’s modern standard.

One thing is certain: the rankings won’t settle the debate.

The games will.
