The Final Rocket Classic: Why One of the PGA Tour’s Newest Events Is Already Saying Goodbye

The Rocket Classic will take place at Detroit Golf Club for the final time under its current title sponsorship.

The Rocket Classic will take place at Detroit Golf Club for the final time under its current title sponsorship.

For golf fans, this week’s Rocket Classic at historic Detroit Golf Club carries a different feeling.

Yes, there will be world-class golf, big-name players, FedEx Cup implications, and another opportunity to watch rising stars compete. But there will also be something else: the end of an era.

After this week’s tournament concludes, the Rocket Classic—as fans have known it—will officially come to an end. Rocket Companies has decided not to extend its title sponsorship beyond 2026, bringing to a close a 13-year relationship with the PGA Tour and an eight-year run in Detroit.

While the announcement surprised many golf fans, the reasons behind it paint a much bigger picture about today’s economy, the mortgage industry, and the future direction of professional golf.

Why Is Rocket Walking Away?

On the surface, many assumed the decision came down to dollars.

The reality is a bit more nuanced.

Rocket Companies said its original objective was never simply to host a PGA Tour event—it was to put Detroit back on the national stage.

According to tournament leadership, that mission has been accomplished.

Over the past eight years, millions of viewers watched Detroit every summer while the tournament generated more than $10 million for local charities and community initiatives, including digital inclusion programs that helped bridge the city’s technology gap.

Tournament director Mark Hollis summed it up best:

“When we launched the Rocket Classic, our mission was to shine a national spotlight on Detroit. That mission has been accomplished.”

The Economics Changed

The timing also isn’t accidental.

Rocket Companies operates in an industry that has experienced one of the toughest stretches in decades.

High interest rates dramatically slowed mortgage originations.

Housing inventory remains historically tight.

Refinancing volume has largely disappeared.

Like many financial companies, Rocket has had to prioritize investments that produce measurable long-term returns.

Then came one of the biggest corporate moves in company history.

Rocket spent billions acquiring Mr. Cooper, creating one of America’s largest mortgage servicing businesses. Integrating an acquisition of that size naturally shifts corporate priorities toward operational growth rather than multi-million-dollar sports sponsorships.

Simply put, investing tens of millions annually into a PGA Tour title sponsorship no longer aligned with the company’s strategic priorities.

The PGA Tour Is Changing Too

Rocket’s decision also arrives during one of the biggest transitions in PGA Tour history.

Beginning in the coming years, the Tour plans to introduce a two-track competitive structure, creating premium events that consistently attract the biggest stars while leaving other tournaments competing for smaller fields and reduced television attention.

That uncertainty made long-term sponsorship commitments more difficult for many corporate partners.

Industry analysts have suggested title sponsorship costs for premier PGA Tour events have risen significantly, making the return on investment harder to justify unless television ratings and star participation consistently deliver.

The Final Rocket Classic

Rather than ending quietly, this year’s event features one of its strongest fields.

Defending Champion

South Africa’s Aldrich Potgieter returns after capturing his first PGA Tour victory here one year ago.

Known as one of golf’s longest hitters, Potgieter quickly became one of the Tour’s brightest young stars.

Players to Watch

Among the biggest names expected this week:

  • Cameron Young
  • Xander Schauffele
  • Wyndham Clark
  • Russell Henley
  • Hideki Matsuyama
  • Patrick Cantlay
  • Keegan Bradley
  • Rickie Fowler
  • Tony Finau
  • Cameron Davis
  • JJ Spaun
  • Ben Griffin
  • Si Woo Kim
  • Harris English

The tournament serves as one of the final opportunities for players to improve their FedEx Cup positioning before the postseason begins.

Players Who Could Win

Cameron Young

Entering in outstanding form, Young has developed into one of the PGA Tour’s elite players and arrives as one of the betting favorites.

Aldrich Potgieter

Length wins at Detroit Golf Club, and nobody hits it farther than the defending champion.

Wyndham Clark

His aggressive style fits perfectly with Detroit Golf Club’s scoring opportunities.

Xander Schauffele

One of the most consistent players in the world and always dangerous on birdie-friendly courses.

Rickie Fowler

The 2023 champion remains a fan favorite and has historically played well in Detroit.

Detroit Golf Club: One of America’s Hidden Gems

Long before PGA Tour television cameras arrived, Detroit Golf Club already had more than a century of history.

Founded in 1899, the club remains one of the oldest golf clubs in the Midwest.

Its famed North Course was designed by legendary architect Donald Ross, whose portfolio also includes Pinehurst No. 2 and Oak Hill.

For decades, the club quietly served Detroit golfers before finally welcoming the PGA Tour in 2019.

Ahead of this year’s event, the course underwent a significant restoration designed to bring back more of Ross’s original vision while making the layout more challenging for today’s professionals.

What Happens Next?

This week’s tournament likely isn’t the end of professional golf in Detroit.

The PGA Tour has already stated it remains interested in keeping an event in the city if a new title sponsor can be secured.

Detroit remains one of America’s largest media markets, and local support for the event has consistently been strong.

The question now becomes who will step in?

Could another major Detroit-based company such as Ford, General Motors, Ally, or another national brand take over?

Or will the PGA Tour reshape its schedule and move on?

Those answers remain unknown.

Final Thoughts

The Rocket Classic arrived in Detroit with a mission bigger than golf.

It helped change national perceptions of the city, generated millions for community programs, introduced thousands of children to the game, and showcased one of America’s oldest golf clubs to a worldwide audience.

While Rocket Companies may be stepping away, the tournament’s impact won’t disappear with Sunday’s final putt.

This weekend isn’t just another stop on the PGA Tour.

It’s the closing chapter of a tournament that helped redefine golf in Detroit—and perhaps the beginning of whatever comes next.
