MySpace Comeback? Owners Say Original Social Network Could Return

For millions of Millennials, MySpace wasn’t just another website. It was the internet. Users customized profile pages, added favorite songs, ranked friends in the famous “Top 8,” and even learned basic HTML along the way. Now, nearly two decades after its peak, the platform’s owners believe MySpace still has a future.

Chris and Tim Vanderhook own MySpace through Variant Technologies. In the new documentary Myspace, they explain why they never gave up on the platform. They believe people want a social network built around real connections instead of endless scrolling.

A Different Vision for Social Media

The brothers argue that today’s largest social platforms rely too heavily on addictive algorithms. Those systems encourage users to keep scrolling instead of connecting with friends.

MySpace wants to take a different approach. The company hopes to bring back the features that made the platform unique while avoiding many of today’s engagement-driven tactics.

Quiet Growth Behind the Scenes

Many people assume MySpace disappeared years ago. However, the platform has continued operating behind the scenes.

According to the documentary, MySpace grew from about 200,000 monthly active users in 2023 to roughly 6 million in 2026. The owners say Millennials looking for a simpler online experience fueled much of that growth.

The platform has also restored several classic features, including:

  • Customizable profile pages
  • The iconic Top 8 friends list
  • Profile music
  • A chronological news feed

Those features helped MySpace stand out during its early years. Today, they offer something many newer platforms no longer provide.

Can Nostalgia Drive a Comeback?

The timing may work in MySpace’s favor. Many users have grown frustrated with algorithm-driven feeds. Others worry about screen addiction, AI-generated content, and endless recommendations.

As a result, some people now prefer smaller communities and chronological timelines. MySpace hopes to meet that demand.

The Challenges Ahead

Even with nostalgia on its side, MySpace faces a difficult road. Today’s social media market includes Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, Snapchat, and several emerging AI-powered platforms.

Winning users back will require more than memories. The company must convince people that its platform offers something different and worth returning to.

Still, MySpace has one major advantage. Millions of former users remember customizing profiles, choosing profile songs, and carefully deciding who belonged in their Top 8. Few social platforms created that level of personal expression.

Final Thoughts

The Vanderhooks have not announced a full relaunch. However, they made one thing clear. They believe MySpace still has a place in today’s digital world.

As more people question the impact of modern social media, MySpace hopes nostalgia, creativity, and authentic connections can power a new chapter. Whether that strategy succeeds remains to be seen, but the original social network is no longer ready to fade into history.
