Instagram Just Changed the Rules: People Can Now Use Your Public Photos to Generate AI Images

Meta's latest AI feature allows public Instagram photos to help generate AI-created images unless users opt out.

Meta's latest AI feature allows public Instagram photos to help generate AI-created images unless users opt out.

For years, social media users have worried about AI scraping their photos. Now, that concern has become much more personal.

Meta has begun rolling out Muse Image, a new AI-powered image generation tool that allows people to create AI-generated images using photos from public Instagram accounts. The feature is enabled by default for adult public profiles, meaning your photos could potentially be used as references in AI-generated creations unless you actively opt out.

For some, it’s an exciting new creative tool.

For others, it’s another reminder that when something is “free,” you may be the product.

So… what’s actually happening?

Meta’s new AI system allows users to type an Instagram username into a prompt. If that account is public, Meta AI can use that person’s public photos to help generate new AI-created images.

According to Meta, the feature is designed for creative projects like invitations, concept art, personalized graphics, and collaborative designs. The company says users remain in control because they can disable the feature in their settings.

Critics argue that’s exactly the problem.

Instead of asking users for permission, Meta chose an opt-out model, meaning millions of public Instagram accounts are automatically included unless users discover the setting and turn it off themselves.

Why people are upset

Privacy advocates aren’t necessarily objecting to AI itself.

They’re questioning consent.

Many users never expected photos they posted years ago for friends, family, or followers to become source material for AI-generated content.

Even more concerning to some users:

  • You won’t receive a notification if someone uses your public content in an AI creation.
  • AI images generated before you opt out are not automatically removed.
  • Many users didn’t know the feature existed until news reports surfaced this week.

Organizations representing creators and performers have also criticized Meta’s decision, saying people should explicitly agree before their likeness can be used by AI systems.

How to turn it off

If you’d rather your public Instagram photos not be used for Meta’s AI image generation, here’s how to disable the feature:

  1. Open Instagram.
  2. Go to your Profile.
  3. Tap the three-line menu in the upper-right corner.
  4. Select Settings and Activity.
  5. Scroll to Sharing and Reuse.
  6. Under Allow people to create with and reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta, switch Posts and Reels off.

If you don’t see the option yet, don’t panic. Meta is rolling out the feature gradually, so the setting may appear over the next several days.

What if your account is private?

There’s some good news.

Private Instagram accounts are not included in this feature, and Meta says accounts belonging to users under 18 are excluded as well.

If privacy is your highest priority, switching your account from public to private also prevents future use of your content through this AI feature.

The bigger conversation

This isn’t really about Instagram.

It’s about the direction the internet is heading.

Every major tech company is racing to build smarter AI products. To do that, they need data—and billions of photos already live on social platforms.

Companies argue these tools unlock creativity and make content creation easier.

Critics counter that creativity shouldn’t come at the expense of informed consent.

Both arguments have merit.

The question many users are asking is simple:

Should permission be something you give… or something you have to remember to take away?

That debate isn’t ending anytime soon.

One thing is certain, though: if your Instagram profile is public, it’s worth taking two minutes today to check your settings.

Your future AI twin may thank you.
