Quantum Computing Is Heating Up: IBM, Microsoft & These Stocks Could Shape the Future

Quantum computing is having one of those weeks where Wall Street, Big Tech, and deep-tech investors are all looking at the same thing and asking the same question: is this finally getting real?

The answer is complicated. The technology is still early. Most quantum companies are not profitable. Many commercial use cases remain years away. But the headlines this week show real movement: IBM is pushing quantum into scientific modeling, Microsoft is speeding up its quantum roadmap, public quantum stocks are moving hard, and investors are hunting for the next big name in the sector.

IBM Pushes Quantum Into Real Science

IBM made one of the biggest quantum headlines this week after announcing work with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Cleveland Clinic on fusion-material simulations using quantum computers. The project focused on molten salts, which matter for future fusion energy systems. IBM described the work as part of a growing 2026 push to show quantum computers as useful scientific tools, not just lab experiments.

That matters because quantum computing needs proof. Investors have heard the hype for years. Now the market wants signs that quantum systems can help solve problems in chemistry, materials science, medicine, logistics, and energy.

IBM is also one of the safer quantum names to watch because it is not just a quantum stock. It has cloud, AI, enterprise software, Red Hat, and government relationships supporting the broader business.

Microsoft Says the Timeline Is Moving Faster

Microsoft also added fuel to the quantum conversation. The company recently unveiled Majorana 2, its next-generation topological quantum chip, and said it now expects to achieve a scalable quantum computer by 2029. Microsoft says the new chip uses qubits that are 1,000 times more reliable than the previous generation.

That is a huge claim. It does not mean Microsoft has solved quantum computing today. But it does show that Big Tech is no longer treating quantum like a science project. Microsoft is tying quantum to AI, security, cloud infrastructure, and long-term computing power.

Quantum Stocks Are Hot, But Risky

The pure-play quantum stocks are still trading like high-risk momentum names.

IonQ, Rigetti, D-Wave, and Quantum Computing Inc. all moved lower today, but volume remained heavy across the group. IonQ traded around $46 with a market cap above $17 billion. Rigetti traded near $16.74 with a market cap above $5.6 billion. D-Wave traded near $21.55 with a market cap near $7.9 billion. Quantum Computing Inc. traded near $8.82 with a market cap near $2 billion.

That is the story with quantum stocks right now. The excitement is real. The valuations are also aggressive.

IonQ Is Still the Pure-Play Leader

IonQ remains one of the most watched quantum stocks. The company reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of $64.7 million, up 755% year over year, and raised full-year guidance to $260 million to $270 million. It also reported remaining performance obligations of $470 million.

IonQ is interesting because it is building more than just quantum computers. The company is also pushing into quantum networking, sensing, security, and space-related infrastructure. That gives investors more than one way to believe in the story.

The risk is valuation. IonQ already trades like the future is arriving fast.

D-Wave Is the Commercial Use-Case Name

D-Wave is different from many quantum companies because it focuses heavily on quantum annealing, which targets optimization problems. Those problems show up in logistics, scheduling, manufacturing, and machine learning.

D-Wave reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of $2.9 million, down from $15 million a year earlier because the prior-year quarter included a large system sale. The company still reported revenue from more than 100 customers, with over half coming from commercial enterprises.

That makes D-Wave a company to watch for real customer adoption, not just technical milestones.

Rigetti Is a High-Risk Hardware Bet

Rigetti remains one of the more speculative names in the space. The company is focused on superconducting quantum computers and hybrid quantum-classical systems.

Rigetti has been working on multi-chip quantum architecture and previously announced purchase orders for two Novera quantum computing systems totaling about $5.7 million, with expected delivery in the first half of 2026.

The upside is big if its hardware roadmap works. The risk is that superconducting quantum computing is expensive, competitive, and technically brutal.

Quantinuum and IQM Add More Competition

The public quantum market is also getting more crowded. Quantinuum says it listed on Nasdaq under the ticker QNT on June 4, 2026. The company is backed by Honeywell and has become one of the highest-profile names in quantum hardware and software.

Europe is also stepping in. IQM Quantum Computers is preparing to trade on Nasdaq after a SPAC merger, adding another public name to the quantum watchlist. IQM builds on-premise superconducting quantum computers for research labs and institutions.

More public quantum companies means more investor choice. It also means more volatility.

Companies to Watch

The big names to watch right now are IBM, Microsoft, Alphabet, IonQ, D-Wave, Rigetti, Quantum Computing Inc., Quantinuum, IQM, Honeywell, and PsiQuantum.

For safer exposure, IBM, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Honeywell are the better-known diversified names.

For higher-risk pure-play exposure, IonQ, D-Wave, Rigetti, Quantum Computing Inc., Quantinuum, and IQM are the names getting attention.

For private-market intrigue, PsiQuantum remains one of the most important companies in the space because it is chasing utility-scale quantum computers using a photonic approach.

The Bottom Line

Quantum computing is not just hype anymore, but it is also not ready to replace traditional computing.

This week’s news shows real progress. IBM is applying quantum systems to scientific modeling. Microsoft is accelerating its roadmap. IonQ is showing revenue growth. D-Wave is building commercial customer traction. Rigetti is still betting on hardware scale. New public names are entering the market.

The opportunity is massive. So is the risk.

Quantum computing may become one of the biggest technology stories of the next decade. But right now, investors should treat the sector like early-stage biotech mixed with AI hype and semiconductor ambition.

Big future. Big swings. Big caution.
