Trump Makes History as Airport Officially Renamed in His Honor While Still in Office

Trump International Airport Officially Opens in Florida

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A piece of American aviation history officially took flight Thursday as Palm Beach International Airport was formally renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport, making Donald Trump the first sitting president in U.S. history to have a major commercial airport named after him while still serving in office.

The name change became official after a Florida law approved earlier this year took effect, ending more than 50 years of the airport operating under the Palm Beach International Airport name.

The move has already sparked celebration among supporters, criticism from opponents, and plenty of discussion about what it means politically and historically.

A Historic First

Regardless of political affiliation, the renaming marks a unique milestone.

While airports across the United States have long honored former presidents—including Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy, George Bush, Gerald Ford, and Bill and Hillary Clinton—those recognitions all came after those leaders had left office.

Trump now becomes the first president to receive the distinction while actively serving as commander in chief.

For supporters, the change reflects what they view as one of the most influential presidencies in modern American history. Critics argue the honor comes too soon and further politicizes public infrastructure.

Either way, the decision is unlike anything seen before in U.S. history.

Why Palm Beach?

Few places are more closely associated with Donald Trump than Palm Beach County.

Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate has served as his primary Florida residence for decades and has frequently been described as his “Winter White House.” The property has hosted world leaders, political allies, campaign events, and international media attention.

Palm Beach County has effectively become the center of Trump’s political universe outside Washington, making the airport’s location especially symbolic.

The airport also serves millions of travelers annually visiting Palm Beach, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Jupiter, and surrounding communities.

How the Name Change Happened

The Florida Legislature approved legislation earlier this year authorizing the renaming of the airport.

Once signed into law by state officials, the measure included a future effective date that arrived Thursday, officially changing the airport’s legal name.

Airport operations themselves remain unchanged.

Travelers can expect:

  • Flights to continue as scheduled.
  • TSA operations to remain the same.
  • Existing airlines to continue serving the airport.
  • Navigation systems and airport codes to remain unchanged while signage and branding are updated over time.

The airport’s three-letter FAA identifier remains PBI, despite the new official name.

Other Airports Named After Presidents

President Trump now joins a select group of presidents honored with major airports, including:

  • John F. Kennedy International Airport (New York)
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport
  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport (Houston)
  • Gerald R. Ford International Airport (Grand Rapids)
  • Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (Little Rock)

The major distinction?

Every one of those names was bestowed after those presidents had completed their time in office.

Trump’s airport is the first named after an active president.

Supporters Celebrate

Supporters say the airport name recognizes Trump’s impact on both Florida and national politics.

Many also point to Palm Beach’s close relationship with Trump through Mar-a-Lago, where numerous political meetings, international visitors, and presidential activities have taken place over the years.

For many residents and visitors, the airport has long served as the primary gateway to Trump’s Florida home.

Critics Push Back

Not everyone is celebrating.

Opponents argue airports and public infrastructure should avoid honoring active political figures, suggesting such recognitions are traditionally reserved after leaders leave office, allowing history to fully evaluate their legacies.

Others questioned whether taxpayer resources should be spent updating signs, branding, maps, and other materials associated with the airport.

Supporters counter that such changes are relatively minor compared to normal infrastructure updates and argue the recognition is well deserved.

A Growing List of Trump-Named Landmarks

The airport joins a steadily expanding list of locations, roads, parks, schools, and public facilities across several states that now bear Donald Trump’s name.

As Trump’s political influence has continued to grow, supporters have increasingly sought permanent tributes recognizing his role in American politics.

The airport, however, is by far one of the highest-profile honors.

Looking Ahead

Passengers arriving in South Florida will now land at President Donald J. Trump International Airport, marking another chapter in an already unprecedented presidency.

Whether viewed as a fitting tribute or a controversial political statement, the renaming is certain to become part of both aviation history and the broader story of Trump’s presidency.

One thing is undeniable: no sitting American president has ever had a commercial airport named in their honor—until now.
